SPORTS FEEVER – July 1, 2021

We don’t have a lot of news this week with the 4th of July/Independence Day holiday this weekend.  But we have some coaching announcements and more.  Have a safe and happy Independence Day!!

Katie Engelstad has been offered and accepted the position of head Crookston Pirate Volleyball coach.  Engelstad will take over for Ashley Stopa pending school board approval at their next meeting at the end of July.

Engelstad is familiar with the program because she has been a Crookston Junior High volleyball coach for the past three years and has coached the juniors down to the freshman in junior high.  She has also been conducting the summer work outs for the Pirate program with skills and drills workouts in June and now several scrimmages in the month of July.

She is a 2013 graduate of Fertile-Beltrami High School where she played varsity volleyball for four years.  She was a team captain, team MVP and all-conference.  She recorded 272 kills, 477 digs and 36 aces in high school.  Engelstad also played collegiately at the University of Jamestown.

Engelstad said the girls have been working hard this summer and they have shown a lot of improvement.

Engelstad works at RiverView Health in Crookston.

The Minnesota Magicians, members of the North American Hockey League, have announced that they have named Nick Bydal the new Head Coach for the organization.  Bydal is an East Grand Forks Senior High School graduate.

“The entire Magicians organization is thrilled to have Nick Bydal as the next Head Coach for the organization,” said Owner Scott Krueger.  “Nick’s NAHL and NCAA playing and coaching experience is what the Magicians were looking for to build off of our success this past season.  Nick is a proven coach, recruiter and his knowledge of the NAHL and NCAA will ensure an easy transition as our head coach and keep us as a destination for student athletes.  Coach Bydal’s ability to develop players, and help them to achieve their goal of playing college hockey, is what we are excited to continue here with the Magicians.”

Nick is a graduate of UW-Stevens Point and continued his hockey career for two seasons in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).  Prior to joining UW-Stevens Point Nick played in the NAHL with the Bismarck Bobcats.  Nick is a Minnesota native and most recently served as the Assistant Coach at the University of St. Thomas Men’s Hockey team from 2017-2021.  Nick also served as the Assistant Coach for the Minnesota Magicians from 2014-2016 before taking his first Head Coaching position with College Station in the NA3HL.

Upon his return to the Magician’s Nick had to say, “I’d like to thank the ownership group for this opportunity and look forward to getting started and continuing the success of the organization.”  Nick went on to say, “I am excited to be back in Junior Hockey and with the Minnesota Magicians.  We are in a great spot and I look forward to continuing with that success.”

The Minnesota Magicians are widely recognized as a leader and example of developing players to the next level with over 30 NCAA commitments in the past.

JOKES

A young boy went up to his father and asked, “Dad, what is the difference between ‘potentially’ and ‘realistically’?”

The father thought for a moment, then answered, “Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars.

Then ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars, and then, ask your brother if he’d sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Come back and tell me what you learn from that.”

So the boy went to his mother and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?” The mother replied, “Of course, I would! We could really use that money to fix up the kitchen and send you kids to a great university!”

The boy then went to his sister and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?  The girl replied, “Oh, good heavens! I LOVE Brad Pitt and I would sleep with him in a heartbeat. Are you nuts?”

The boy then went to his brother and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?” “Of course,” the brother replied. “Do you know how much a million bucks would buy?”

The boy pondered the answers for a few days and then went back to his dad. His father asked him, “so, did you find out the difference between ‘potentially’ and ‘realistically’?”

The boy replied, “Yes, ‘Potentially’ you and I are sitting on three million dollars, but ‘realistically’, we’re living with two hookers and a future congressman.”
