UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BEATS WAYNE STATE

The University of Minnesota Crookston Women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak behind 20 points from Abby Guidinger in a 66-65 win over Wayne State in an NSIC game played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.

First Quarter –
Minnesota Crookston scored the first two baskets of the day with lay-ups by Kylie Post (Soph., Corcoran) and Bren Fox (Soph., Norwood Young America) giving the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead. Wayne State answered with a 10-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 5:38 to play in the first quarter. Mary Burke (R-Fr., Virginia) made a three-pointer stopping the run and bringing the Golden Eagles within 10-7. Abby Guidinger (Jr., Waukesha, WI) made a job shot following by a Mary Burke lay-up trimming Minnesota Crookston’s deficit down to 15-13. Wayne State used a 7-0 run to gain a 22-13 lead but the Golden Eagles closed the final minute of the quarter with two baskets pulling within 22-17 after one-quarter of play.

Second Quarter –
Minnesota Crookston opened the second quarter with a Kylie Post lay-up followed by an Abby Guidinger jump shot cutting UMC’s deficit down to 22-21. Bren Fox scored inside with 4:45 to play in the first-half tying the game at 27-27. Minnesota Crookston took the lead into the locker room after Abby Guidinger connected on a three-pointer with 24-seconds to play in the second quarter, giving her 13 points in the half, as the Golden Eagles carried a 35-33 lead into halftime.

Third Quarter –
Minnesota Crookston started the second half as it did in the first two quarters scoring the first 4 points. Bren Fox extended UMC’s lead with a lay-up giving the Golden Eagles a 37-33 lead. Kylie Post continued the run with a finish at the rim to make it 39-33. The Wildcats countered with an 11-0 run to pull ahead 44-39 with 4:50 to play in the third quarter. Minnesota Crookston used a 6-0 run before the end of the third quarter trimming the deficit down to 52-49 going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter –
Minnesota Crookston opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run capped off by a Paige Weakley (Sr., Kearney, MO) jump shot giving the Golden Eagles a 57-52 lead with 7:44 to play. Abby Guidinger went on a personal 5-0 run increasing Minnesota Crookston’s advantage to 62-55 with 4:11 to play. Wayne State went on a 10-0 run over two minutes to take a 65-62 lead with 1:55 to play. A pair of free-throws by Julia Peplinski (Soph., Hustisford, WI) with 1:09 to play cut UMC’s deficit down to 1 before an Abby Guidinger jump shot gave the Golden Eagles a 66-65 lead with 12-seconds to play. Wayne State turned the ball over without getting a shot in their final possession as Minnesota Crookston completed the comeback for a 66-65 win.

Minnesota Crookston improves to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles return to the court next Saturday when they take on Bemidji State in Bemidji at 2:00 P.M. on KROX. Wayne State falls to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
