The Hibbing Bluejackets played tough, physical defense and pulled away to beat the Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team 46-30 in a game played in Hibbing.

Crookston got off to a slow start and Hibbing took advantage and took a two or three possession lead and held on to a 23-17 lead at halftime. “We got some stops on the defensive end, but we missed some shots we should have made,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “I thought we ran our offense well, but we weren’t able to get the shots to fall and Hibbing’s defense had something to do with that.” Crookston only made two of eight free throw attempts in the first half.
In the second half, the Pirate defense continued to play well, and Hayden Winjum did a great job of keeping Hibbing’s outstanding point guard, Abbey McDonald, in check and limiting her to 14 points. “McDonald scored a couple baskets early in the game, but Hayden did a great job after that making her work for every point she scored,” said Coach Zimmerman. “Defensively I thought we played well enough to win, we just didn’t finish on the offensive end.” Hibbing slowly pulled away through the second half and won 46-30. “It was good to play Hibbing because they are long and big and liked to play physical,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We saw two good teams this weekend and that was good for us as we get ready for the stretch run.”
Crookston drops to 10-3 on the year and will host Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Monday, a game you can hear on KROX at 7:30 PM.
