OSAKIS RUNS AWAY WITH VICTORY OVER PIRATE FOOTBALL IN SEASON OPENER

The Crookston Pirates opened up the 2022 season with a 35-13 loss to the powerful and athletic Osakis Silverstreaks in Osakis.

1st Quarter-

The Silverstreaks received the opening kickoff to start the game and chose to start the game on the ground, with them handing the ball off four times to get two first downs in the first drive to get to midfield. But after a play-action play to Osakis Fullback Drew Imdieke, Imdieke fumbled the ball which was recovered by Crookston Linebacker Carter Coauette to give the Pirates the ball at their own 44-yard-line. The Pirates also chose to stick to the ground but were pushed back by the Silverstreaks which forced the Pirates to punt. The Silverstreaks took advantage of the defensive stand and made a tremendous punt return by Kyle Mages to return the ball back to the Pirate’s 34-yard-line. The Silverstreaks returned to the ground and after two running plays, found themselves in the red zone for the first time. Four plays later, Osakis Fullback Drew Imdieke broke through the defensive line for a Touchdown to put the Silverstreaks up 7-0. The Pirates took the kickoff afterward and had a decent return by Ethan Boll to start the Pirates at their own 33, but they once again went three and out for the second drive, forcing them to punt again, and starting the Silverstreaks at their own 30. The Silverbacks responded immediately with an explosive 46-yard run by Running Back Tyson Hageson to set the Silverbacks up at the Pirates’ 24-yard line. The Silverbacks took the momentum and fired a long 31-yard bomb to the right side of the endzone to Wide Reciever Wyatt Sell but the kicker Duncan Tronicke’s extra point was blocked to only put them up 13-0.

2nd Quarter-

The Crookston Pirates’ offense finally found some life at the start of the second quarter with them getting their first fresh set of downs of the game. But were soon stood up again at their own 35 and were forced to punt. The Silverstreaks began their first drive of the second quarter from their own 35, who continued to dominate along the ground and made a strong 28-yard gain to Wyatt Sell to push them down to the Pirates’ 25. Soon followed by Running Back Tyson Hagedon pushing the Silverstreaks into the Pirates Red Zone at the 8-yard line to set Drew Imdieke up again to charge into the endzone for another touchdown with Tyson Hagedon following up to run in a two-point conversion to put them up over the Pirates, 21-0. The Pirates began their next drive on their own 25-yard line and the offense finally responded with a 74-yard run by Running Back Ethan Boll to finally put the Pirates’ on the board. The Pirates looked to try and cut the deficit to 13 with a two-point conversion but Osakis sacked Quarterback Jack Doda to stop a two-point conversion. Crookston kicked the ball back to Osakis Gavin Meunzhuber, who bobbled the ball but was able to recover it before the Pirates could get to the ball and forced the Silverstreaks to start at their own 15 with 2:14 left in the half. After a pass interference call on Carter Coauette to give the Silverstreaks a fresh set of downs and a better starting position at their own 32, the Silverstreaks moved methodically down the field to eat up the remainder of the clock in the half by launching a 27-yard pass to Wide Reciever Ben Berger to set Osakis up at the Pirates’ 16 yard-line. After a penalty, that pushed them back, Kyles Mages found Tyson Hagedon on a screen pass to find the endzone to put the Silverbacks up 28-6 and leaving the Pirates with only 14 seconds left in the half. The Pirates tried one more run but gained nothing on the play, ending the half trailing 28-6.

3rd Quarter-

The Pirates received the ball to start the second half to start at their own 31-yard-line and answered immediately with a strong 16-yard run by Ethan Boll to get the ball to midfield. But the Osakis defense stood strong to halt the Pirates’ progress and forced them to punt once again. The Silverstreaks started their first drive of the second half at their 33-yard-line and quickly got the ball to midfield in just two plays and into Pirates territory. With the ball on their 39-yard-line, the Pirates’ defense finally held the Silverbacks off to force Osakis to punt for the first time. Though this set the Pirates up deep in their own territory with punter Kyle Mages pinning the Pirates at their own 10-yard-line. But Quarterback Jack Doda underthrew his receiver to be intercepted by Cornerback Kyle Mages who returned it all the way to the Pirates’ 4-yard-line. The Silverbacks took advantage of the turnover with Tyson Hadedon plowing through the defense to get another touchdown for the Silverbacks, putting them up 35-6. The Pirates started their next drive at their own 35-yard-line after the kickoff went out of bounds, but after a block in the back play on the offense, the Pirates were forced back to their own 12-yard line. Despite making it to their own 20, the Silverstreaks were unable to convert the long conversion and were forced to punt again. Osakis began their next drive with great field position at the Pirates’ 44-yard-line, who marched down the field with Gaven Cimbura pushing them down to the Pirates’ 22 to end the quarter.

4th Quarter-

The Silverstreaks continued their drive down the field with Running Back Gaven Cimbura down into the Pirates’ red zone, but the Pirates’ defense finally halted the Silverstreaks offense on a turnover on downs and started their next drive on their 15-yard line. Running Back Ethan Boll quickly pushed the Pirates out of their own red zone with two strong back-to-back runs that got the Pirates to midfield. Antonio Romero also showed off his speed by breaking through the Silverstreaks line to get the Pirates into the Silverstreaks red zone for the first time. The Pirates pushed all the way to the 1-yard line before Ethan Boll finally pushed through to the endzone to give the Pirates and himself a second touchdown to have them trail 35-13 with 1:08 left in the game. Osakis began their final drive at their own 20 after the ball went into the endzone for a touchback. Osakis Running Back Reggie George and Micah Moore carried the ball two more times and Osakis beat Crookston 35-13.

Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will host Barnesville on Friday, September 9.
