HAWLEY NUGGETS VOLLEYBALL TOO MUCH FOR PIRATES

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team hosted the Hawley Nuggets on Tuesday night in a Section 8AA matchup. It was a whiteout in honor of the 50th anniversary of Title IX. The Nuggets dominated sets one and three and won a close second set for a 3-0 victory 25-8, 25-20, 25-6.

First Set
Hawley would claim the first two points of the match before the Pirates would counter and tie the opening set at 2-2. Hawley would score three straight then before a Joey Nesseth kill made it 5-3. Hawley slowly continued to build their lead with their big outside hitters and found themselves in front 11-7. The Nuggets would completely dominate the rest of the opening set going on a 14-1 run to win the set 25-8. Hawley used their big hitters combined with a couple of aces and Pirates mistakes to turn the tides and win the first set.

Second Set
The Nuggets would take an early lead in the second set as well before Crookston would score five straight points and find themselves in front 9-7. The two teams would trade points back and forth and after a Nuggets kill, the set would be tied at 15-15. Crookston would get a point on a Nuggets mistake, but it would be the last lead Crookston would have in the entire set. Hawley would pull ahead 17-16, and after the Pirates tied the set again, the Nuggets would end the set on an 8-3 run for a 25-20 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.

Third Set
The Pirates would take an early lead in the third set after a Nuggets mistake, but Hawley would score four straight after that to lead 4-1. The Nuggets would cruise for a while after that as the Pirates continued to make mistakes, and Crookston would take a timeout to talk things over trailing 11-3. Hawley would take over from their and go on a 14-3 run to end the set and take home a 3-0 victory over the Pirates. The Nuggets were better in all phases of the match.

Crookston drops to 2-15 on the season and will be back in action next week when they host Warroad on Tuesday night. Hawley improves to 9-7 with the win.
