The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball team won all four matches on its trip out east to start the season. In the first match, they beat Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts 3-2. The next three matches were played in the Saint Anselm/Southern New Hamshire University tournament played in Manchester, New Hampshire and the Golden Eagles beat Saint Anselm College 3-1, Felician University 3-0, and finished off the weekend and trip sweep with a 3-0 victory over Southern New Hamshire University 3-0.
UMC vs Assumption University
UMC won a hard-fought match to start the trip on Thursday with a 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12) victory over Assumption University.
FIRST SET
The set was tied at 1 and 2 and UMC led 4-3 when they rattled off kills from Emma Malek (Jr. Plainfield, IL) and Abigail Ernster (Fresh. La Crescent) for a 6-3 lead. Assumption responded with five straight points to take an 8-6 lead. The teams exchanged points and UMC got within an 11-10 deficit before Assumption went on a 6-1 run for a 17-11 lead and continued to build on the lead for a 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
SECOND SET
The set was tied at 1, 2, and 3 and Assumption took a 4-3 lead before UMC rattled off four straight points behind three Assumption errors and a Carizma Muth (Soph. Randolph, WI) kill for a 7-4 lead. UMC led 8-6 when they rattled off five straight points behind two Malek kills, a kill from Ernster and two Assumption errors for a 13-6 lead. The Golden Eagles led 14-8 when Madison Carsten (Jr. Wadena) had two kills mixed with another Assumption error for a 17-8 lead. Assumption didn’t go down without a fight as they responded with an 8-2 run to get within a 19-16 deficit. After the teams exchanged points, Malek had a kill, Muth had an ace and Assumption had an attack error and UMC led 23-17 and won the match 25-19 on a Dana Melby (Jr. Gonvick) kill to tie the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET
UMC carried the momentum from set two to the start of the third set with a 7-1 run. Muth had three kills and Ernster added two more in the run. Leading 8-3, UMC’s Muth and Ernster had back-to-back kills followed by an Assumption attack error for an 11-3 lead. UMC led 15-8 when Assumption went on a six point run to get within a 15-14 deficit. UMC responded with a 7-1 run with a paif of Kailee Waasdorp (Jr. West Fargo, ND) service aces, an ace by Muth, a kill by Muth, and three Assumption errors for a 19-14 lead. UMC held on the rest of the way to win the set 25-18 on another kill by Melby for a 25-18 victory to take a 2-1 lead.
FOURTH SET
UMC built an 8-4 lead to start the set, but Assumption answered with five straight points to take a 9-8 lead. The teams played even and Assumption led 19-18. Assumption built a 23-19 before UMC’s Carsten had a kill and an ace to get within a 23-21 deficit. Assumption scored the next two points to win the set 25-21 to tie the match at 2-2.
FIFTH SET
The teams were tied at 1 and 2 and with Assumption leading 3-2, UMC’s Ernster tied the set with a kill and after an Assumption attack error, Waasdorp followed with an ace for a 5-3 lead. Assumption battled back to tie the set at 7-7 and led 9-8. UMC answered with a kill from Muth, an Assumption attack error and a Malek service ace for an 11-9 lead. Leading 13-12, UMC got a point on an Assumption service error and won the match with a block by Muth and Malek to win the set 15-12, winning the season-opening match 3-2.

UMC vs Saint Anselm
UMC continued its hot start to the season with a 3-1 victory over Saint Anselm (25-21, 25-11, 23-25, 25-11).
FIRST SET-
The teams were tied at 1, 2, and 3 before UMC’s Malek had a kill followed by two Saint Anselm attack errors for a 6-3 lead. Saint Anselm went on a 6-12 run for a 10-8 lead. Saint Anselm built a 17-13 lead before UMC got two points on Saint Anselm errors and a Carsten kill to get within a 17-16 deficit. After a Saint Anselm point, Carsten had a kil, St. Anselm had two attack errors and Muth had a kill for a 20-18 lead. After another Saint Anselm had a point before UMC added three more points with two more Saint Anselm errors and another Muth kill for a 23-19 lead. Saint Anselm had two points and UMC ended the set with another point off another Saint Anselm attack error and a kill from Ernster for a 25-21 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
SECOND SET-
UMC started the set on a 3-1 run with a kill by Carsten and two service aces from Ellery Ehresmann (Fresh. Albany). The set was tied at 4-4 when Ehresmann had a kill before Waasdorp had two service aces for a 7-4 lead. After a Saint Anselm point, UMC’s Muth had a kill and an ace along with three Saint Anselm errors for a 12-5 lead. Saint Anselm scored three straight points before UMC responded with a 7-0 run behind three Carsten kills and two Ernster aces for a 19-8 lead. UMC continued to cruise and won the set 25-11 on a Carsten kill for a 25-11 victory to take a 2-0 lead.
THIRD SET-
The set was tied at 1, 2, 4, and 5 before Saint Anselm took a 9-5 lead. UMC responded with with three points on a pair of Melby kills and a Saint Anselm error to get within a 9-8 deficit. Saint Anselm led 12-11 when they scored three points for a 15-11 lead. Saint Anselm led 17-12 when UMC went on a 6-2 run behind three Carsten kills and three Saint Anselm errors to bring the Golden Eagles within a 19-18 defcit. UMC tied the set at 20 with another Carsten kill and a Saint Anselm attack error. Trailing 21-20, UMC answered with two more Carsten kills for a 22-21 lead. UMC led, 23-22 before Saint Anselm scored three straight points for a 25-23 victory.
FOURTH SET-
UMC took a 3-1 lead behind with two kills from Lexi Scharold. With the set tied at 4 and 5, UMC scored four straight points with a Carsten kill, a Ernster service ace and two Saint Anselm attack erro for a 9-5 lead. UMC led 12-8 when UMC’s Carsten, Ehresmann, and Scharold kills and a Saint Anselm attack error for a 16-8 lead. The teams exchanged points and UMC led 24-17 lead before Saint Anselm scored four points to get within a 24-21 deficit. UMC’s Malek ended the match with a kill for a 25-21 victory to win the match 3-1.

UMC vs Felician University
The Golden Eagles started off Saturday with their third straight victory as they cruised to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Felcian University.
SET ONE –
UMC started the set on a 9-2 run. The match started with two Carsten kills which were followed by kills from Scharold, Malek and several attack errors by Felician. UMC led 10-4 when they rattled off eight straight points with kills by Malek, Carsten, and Melby. Two aces from Ernster and the Golden Eagles led 18-4. UMC continued to roll and cruised to a 25-7 victory.
SET TWO-
UMC jumped out to a 4-2 lead with kills from Ernster and Muth. The match was tied at 4, 5, and 6 before UMC scored three straight points on kills from Malek, Carsten, and Melby for a 9-6 lead. After a Felician point, UMC scored five straight points with kills from Muth, Carsten and three Felician attack errors for a 14-7 lead. UMC continued to control play and won the set 25-16 on a Carsten kill.
SET THREE–
The third set was a good battle with ties at 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. UMC rattled off three points with a pair of kills by Carsten for an 18-15 lead. Felician scored two points before UMC scored five straight points with two Muth kills, a kill by Carsten and two Malek aces for a 23-17 lead. UMC finished the match off with a Carsten kill (her 18th of the match) to win the set 25-20 to win the match 3-0.

UMC vs Southern New Hampshire
UMC finished the trip out east with another 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) victory over Southern New Hampshire.
SET ONE-
SNH took a 4-1 lead to start the set and continued to build an 8-4 lead before UMC scored three points on a SNH service error, a Malek kill and a Muth ace to get within an 8-7 deficit. SNH took a 12-8 lead UMC tied the set with four straight points with three straight kills by Carsten and a SNH attack error. After SNH scored two points, UMC answered with three whhile taking advantage of two SNH errors and a Ehresmann ace for a 15-14 lead. UMC continued to pull away to win the set 25-20 on a Ernster kill. to take a 1-0 lead.
SECOND SET-
UMC started the match on an 8-2 run behind two Muth kills and a Carsten kill. UMC had a 13-9 lead after kills from Carsten and Ernster and after a SNH point, Carsten followed with another kill and after a SNH attack error, UMC led 15-9. The Golden Eagles continued to pull away and took a 24-13 lead after kills from Carsten and Muth. After two SNH points, Carsten ended the set with a kill for a 25-15 victory.
THIRD SET-
UMC started the set on a 4-1 run with two Carsten kills, a kill by Muth and a SNH attack error. SNH tied the set at 5-5. The teams battled back and forth and the Golden Eagles led 13-12 before they scored three points with two Carsten aces and an Ehresmann kill for a 16-12 lead. The teams continued to go back-and-forth with neither team getting more than a two-point run. UMC led 24-21 when SNH had an attack error giving UMC the 25-21 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
UMC starts the season 4-0 on the year and will travel to Mankato on September 12 and 13 to take on Upper Iowa, Chadron State, Lake Superior State University and Quincy University at the Maverick Invite before kicking off conference play when they host Wayne state on Friday, September 19.
