Climax-Fisher Volleyball takes down LPA in 5-set thriller

The Climax-Fisher Knight Volleyball team battled back after dropping the opening set and came away with a five-set victory over the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders by a score of 15-25, 25-19, 25-15, 24-26, 15-4 in Climax on Tuesday night.

FIRST SET
LPA couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, as two Kenna Mattson aces propelled a 7-1 run to start the match. The Knights tried to find their groove after a quick timeout, getting a big Emma Schultes block, but the LPA offense continued to swing freely, and a Katelyn Smith kill sparked an 8-3 run, putting the Raiders up 15-4. After the second Knights timeout, Brooklyn Hoffman responded with back-to-back kills. After the Raiders took a 22-8 lead, the Knights put together their best volleyball of the set, going on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 24-15, before a net violation ended the set at 25-15 in favor of the Raiders.

SECOND SET
The Knights got off to a much better start in set two, as three Peyton Hoffman kills started a 7-3 run to open the set for the Knights. The Raiders continued to fight to keep the gap at three, but they weren’t able to get on any major runs in the set. A Kenna Mattson kill capped off a mini Raider run, getting the score down to 11-10, but the Knights responded in kind, breaking open an 8-2 run with the help of three Lucy Paulsrud kills to jump out to a 19-12 lead. The Knights kept that gap all the way up to 24-16, and even though the Raiders got three points in a row, including consecutive aces, an excellent Anna Nesvig dump sparked an error, giving the Knights a 25-19 set victory, tying the match at a set apiece.

THIRD SET
The momentum did not stop for the Knights in set three, as they opened up an 8-3 run to open the set, fueled by a Courtney Brault ace and multiple Raider service errors. The Raiders tried to hang with the Knights, but just like the second set, the Knights did a fabulous job of maintaining the advantage throughout the set. At 15-8, the Raiders found another mini-run, scoring four of five points to cut the lead down to 16-12, but that would be more points than they would score in the remainder of the set, as the Knights exploded offensively and defensively, ending the set on a 9-3 run, capped off by a powwrful Brooklyn Hoffman kill, taking the 3rd set 25-15 and going up 2-1.

FOURTH SET
Things changed on a dime to start set four. LPA found a second win,d and used kills by Kendra Nelson and Tallyn Nerdahl to open the set up in a big way, taking a 10-2 lead. At 13-5, the Knights started to find something once again, as a Claire Erickson kill sparked a 5-0 run, putting the Knights within 3 at 13-10. However, the Raiders scored three in a row to go up 16-10, and then kept the lead at 6 until 21-15. That was when the Knights stormed forward, going on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 22. However, they were unable to take the lead at any point, and the Raiders held on to take the 4th set 26-24, tying the match at 2 sets apiece.

FIFTH SET
The Knights seemed to be tired of falling behind in sets as they stormed ahead to a 7-2 lead to open up set 5. It appeared that the Raiders might have just ran out of gas, as the errors compounded throughout the set. Brooklyn Hoffman had 3 kills and a block in the set, and the Knights cruised to a 15-4 win in the final set, taking the match 3 sets to 2.

Climax-Fisher improves to 3-5 on the season, while Lake-Park Audubon drops to 4-6.
