Roseau cruises to a sweep over Pirate Volleyball

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team ran into one of the top teams in Section 8AA as the Roseau Rams cruised to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-7) victory at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.

FIRST SET
Roseau scored the first four points of the match with kills from Anna Ulvin and Cora Lundbohm and two Pirate errors. Crookston responded with five straight points, a Roseau service error, a Brynna Kopecky ace, two Rams attack errors, and a Jayde Uttermark kill for a 5-4 lead. Roseau dominated the rest of the set as they finished on a 21-3 run to win the set 25-8. Roseau’s Cora Lundbohm and Maryn Byfuglien had three aces each in the run. Byfuglien also added two kills while the last three points of the set were Crookston attack errors, and Roseau cruised to a 25-8 victory.

SECOND SET
Roseau jumped out to an 8-2 lead behind two kills and an ace from Anna Ulvin, a kill apiece from Evy Thingvold and Lundbohm, mixed with three Pirate errors, gave the Rams a quick lead. Crookston stopped the run with an Abigail Bruley kill, which started a back-and-forth battle for a few points that added kills from Madi Abrams and Kopecky, and the Pirates trailed 11-5. Roseau led 12-6 when they finished the set strong by going on a 13-2 run. The run started with four kills, with two coming from Ulvin and one each from Baumgartner and Thingvold. After a Pirate kill, Roseau scored eight straight points with three kills from Ulvin, two from Lundbohm, one from Thingvold and Baumgartner, and an ace from Aubrey Eeg for a 24-7 lead. Crookston’s Abrams had a kill before the Pirates served into the net, and Roseau won 25-8 to take a 2-0 lead.

THIRD SET
Roseau started the set on a 13-0 run. It began with a Crookston attack error, an ace, and a kill from Aubrey Leg. After a Crookston attack error, Lundbohm had three kills, and Baumgartner added a kill for an 8-0 lead. After Crookston had an attack error, Lundbohm had a big kill before Eeg had three aces for a 13-0 lead. Crookston finally got on the board with a Roseau service error, and they added another point when the Rams hit out of bounds to get within a 13-2 deficit. Roseau bounced back with three kills, one each from Ulvin, Byfuglien, and Baumgartner for a 16-2 lead. Crookston got a point when the Rams had a service error and Morgan Boll served up an ace to get within a 16-4 deficit. Roseau led 23-7 when Evy Thingvold had back-to-back kills for a 25-7 victory to win the match 3-0.

Crookston ends the regular season with a 1-20 record and will play in the first round of the Section 8AA volleyball tournament on Wednesday, October 22 on the road against an opponent to be named later. Roseau improves to 19-4 on the year.
