The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team got the first varsity goal of Aubrey Bartrum’s career and the first varsity shutout of Madilyn Abrams’ career en route to an 8-0 victory over International Falls on Saturday.
FIRST PERIOD
The Pirates started the game firing shot after shot at Aunnuka Baron in net for the Broncos, and that would be the main story of the game, as Crookston dominated puck possession and shot taking. However, Baron did a great job stopping what was in front of her, and the Pirates were only able to break through later in the period, as Aubrey Bartrum recorded her first career varsity goal to put the Pirates up 1-0. Though Crookston outshot the Broncos 25-4 in the first period, they could only get one on the board, and the Pirates took that 1-0 lead into the intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
As the second period got underway, the first half of it went about the same as the first period, where the Pirates were getting many shots on goal, but Baron was making stops. Eventually, however, the Pirates broke through, and when one goal got through, many followed. Bartrum started things with her second goal of the game at 7:30 to put the Pirates up 2, then Rilynn Aubol scored unassisted 58 seconds later to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. The final goal of the period came in the final two minutes of the period, when Kinsley Wangan scored her first career varsity goal, giving the Pirates a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period.
THIRD PERIOD
As the third period started, the floodgates were open for the Pirates who continued scoring goals. Even though the Pirates were shorthanded at the start of the period, Logan Brekken scored to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Then, they were able to send the game to running time, as Aubol scored her second goal of the game 47 seconds later to go up 6-0. The Pirates were able to get two goals later in the period, also 45 seconds from each other, as Jensen Stinar and Shyuh Burnette were each able to cash in, and the Pirates would cruise to an 8-0 victory.
Crookston improves to 3-7 on the year and will host Bemidji on Tuesday.
