The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team’s Jensen Stinar scored her second overtime goal of the season to give her team a big 5-4 overtime win over the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game in Detroit Lakes.
FIRST PERIOD
As the first period got started, Detroit Lakes came out hot in the opening seconds, getting the first shot on goal from Lily Mariotti, which Abrams saved. Little did the Lakers know, however, that the one shot on goal would be all they’d get in the period. Crookston proceeded to control the puck for the rest of the period, preventing the Lakers from doing anything on offense. However, freshman Paityn Solberg in net for the Lakers was stopping everything the Pirates threw at her. That is, until the Pirates got their first power play of the game, and Emma LaPlante cashed in on an assist from Jensen Stinar, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. They would be unable to score again in the period, despite leading 16-1 in shots on goal; thus, the 1-0 score would stand as the period came to an end.
SECOND PERIOD
The second period went completely differently than the first, with fewer shots on goal, yet more pucks finding the back of the net. Emma LaPlante was the first to score, putting away her second of the night on a breakaway and putting the Pirates up 2-0. That lead would only last a couple of minutes, however, as Aurora Jabas scored for DL on a breakaway of her own, and DL would cut the lead down to 2-1. That gap would stay until the halfway point of the period, when LaPlante scored again, her third of the night, and the Pirates recaptured their 3-1 lead. The Pirates had multiple opportunities to increase the lead, with Adley Vigness hitting the post and missing a wide-open net, but it seemed that the period would end at 3-1. However, with under a minute left, a turnover in center ice gave Jabas her second breakaway goal of the period, and Detroit Lakes was able to cut the deficit to 3-2 as the period came to a close.
THIRD PERIOD
For the first 5 minutes of the third period, the game went back to its first-period tendencies, with very few shots on goal for both squads. Then, Emma LaPlante committed a roughing penalty, and Hadley Songstad scored on the power play to tie the game at 3. Detroit Lakes was then able to capitalize on a wild play, where a puck from the blue line somehow floated over Madi Abrams’ mask without her seeing it, and the Lakers took a 4-3 lead off of it. That didn’t, however, as Adley Vigness scored just 23 seconds later, and the game was suddenly tied at four after a wild sequence. FOr the final four minutes of the period, each team only had one shot on goal, and the game stayed tied at 4-4, sending the game to overtime..
OVERTIME
As overtime began, both teams played conservatively in the first few minutes. Then, the Lakers looked like they would have a breakaway, but Lauren Tull was there to break the play up. This led to a couple minutes of each team making pushes at the net, and it capitalized with a drive by Emma LaPlante that was stopped by Solberg, but the puck found the stick of Jensen Stinar, who put away her second OT goal of the year, giving the Pirates a 5-4 win.
Crookston improves to 4-7 on the year, 2-3 in the section, while Detroit Lakes drops to 3-4, 1-1 in the section.
