Crookston Park Board welcomes new Park and Rec Supervisor and gets an update on the pool

The Crookston Park Board met on Monday afternoon at the Crookston City Hall conference room.

NEW SUPERVISOR
The board was introduced to the new Park and Rec Supervisor, Katy Spoden. Previously, Spoden was the Warroad Area Chamber of Commerce business manager since 2019. She has also been an Assistant Recreation Director in Nome, Alaska, and Park and Rec Director in Roseau.
“I have a background in parks and recreation, so I worked in Roseau, I worked in Nome, Alaska, I’ve worked in recreation in the Brainerd area as well, so just kind of all over the place,” said Spoden, who is excited for all the activities Crookston offers. “Just running the recreation programs that the city has. Where I just came from in Warroad, we don’t have too much of that. So it was a good opportunity and a good community.”

Spoden said she enjoys the relationships built through recreation. “I like watching people get relationships and friendships through the programming that they’re doing,” said Spoden. “Whether it’s pickleball or it’s curling or it’s adult softball, and watching kids kind of develop their skills too through those programs as well.”

POOL UPDATE
The Crookston Community Pool remains closed until later this week due to the continued cold water temperature, which is still too low because of ongoing boiler issues. Grove Mechanical has been trying to solve the issue. ” We think we’ve got it narrowed down to why we’re not getting to full heating. They plan to conduct further checks on it tomorrow, but we believe we are moving in the right direction,” said Crookston Park and Rec Director Scott Butt. “Right now, it looks like we’re not getting the full steam out of our boiler. So hopefully we will have it open on Thursday. However, we will keep everyone informed of our progress and what’s happening.”

OLD ARENA RAILING DONATION
Rick Brekken, formally of Crookston and currently living in Detroit Lakes, donated an old railing from the old Crookston Arena to be displayed in the Crookston Sports Center. The railing is from the locker room area down to the ice in the old arena. Scott Kleven helped put it together and the railing has been installed underneath the two old arena photos on the wall in the CSC event arena. “Scott’s put a lot of time and effort into this, and I really want to thank Scott for all he’s done with it,” said Butt. “Not just with the railing, but all the other stuff he does at the rink, because when it comes to the history of the rink and stuff, Scott is just a phenomenal guy at doing that and I really want to thank him for everything he’s done.”

Butt said if anybody has something from the old arenas and would like to donate it to be displayed at the Crookston Sports Center to let him know. “I really believe we need to not forget our past and honor our past. If anyone has anything from the old rink that they’d like to donate to us, we’d be more than happy to have it, as we’d love to create a memorial on the wall and really showcase that,” said Butt. “If anybody has anything, we’d be more than happy to talk to them about it.”

CROOKSTON TO HOST THE U15B NORTH REGION HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Crookston will fill in as the host for the U15B North Region Girls Hockey tournament, February 27 – March 1, after the scheduled host, Bemidji, is unable to host it. The tournament will have eight teams. “We hosted it last year. Due to the late change, we’re a little bit behind the eight ball here, so we’ve got to get going on it,” said Butt. “We’re excited because it is a good thing for Crookston. I think you’ll see good hockey and it should be a lot of fun.”

The next Park Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 9.
