Crookston High School One-Act Play to hold public performance on Tuesday, January 20

The Crookston High School One-Act play has been working hard throughout the month of January to get ready for the Sub-Section competition coming up on Saturday, January 24 at the East Grand Forks Senior High School. To get ready for the competition, they will have a public performance on Tuesday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Crookston High School Auditorium.

The play is titled “Poor Bridget” and is a true story about the first woman hanged in the Salem Witch Trials. “I thought the theme of this one was so good because if you come to the show, you will see the kids turning from 1600 dress into modern dress. Media, iPads, phones will come out,” said Director Beth Carlson. “You’ll see messages being sent. It’s the way we spread misinformation in this day and age. It wasn’t that different than back in the 1600s because they were spreading it like wildfire too, and people were hanging because of it. So, you know, come just for the last line, if nothing else, because it says so much.”

Carlson said the crew has been working hard. “It’s gone very well. I have a really good group of kids. They are very committed. There’s a lot of risk-taking in this show, and they come up to the task,” said Carlson. “They do whatever I ask them to do, and which sometimes is a lot. I’ve been really happy with them. You are always battling sicknesses and, you know, grades and things like that, but so far so good. I think we’re going to be in good shape, hopefully.”

Carlson thanked those who had helped with the costuming, set design, and construction. “The wonderful set and costuming that we have. It is wonderful that I’m able to work with Phyllis Hagen on every single show I’ve done. She just does such a marvelous job,” said Carlson. “And then Gary Stegman has been building our sets for us. And I really think our set is very impressive, workable, and a little scary.”

Carlson said the lighting and sound crew is important to the show. “This is a very technical show. And my sound effects and sound light people are working so hard,” said Carlson. “It’s very key, these moments, when the sound and the music and lights all work together. And that’s taken a lot of rehearsal time.”

The public performance will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, in the Crookston High School auditorium. “I hope you come and see it. I think these kids are worth watching, and they’ve worked so hard,” said Carlson. “It would be lovely to have an audience to support them. So come and see it.”

If you can’t make it on Tuesday, the Sub-section competition will start at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, at the East Grand Forks Senior High Auditorium, and Carlson said they would love to see a crowd of Crookston people there. “There’ll be five other schools, including us. And I should be getting the time soon, maybe by Tuesday,” said Carlson. “I will be able to announce when we will be performing, so you can come and support us. That would be great. We would love that.
