Crookston Girls Basketball uses solid defense to beat Stephen-Argyle

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team used solid defense to beat the Stephen-Argyle Storm 50-33 at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF
Stephen-Argyle’s Annika Adolphson scored the game’s first four points to give the Storm an early lead. Crookston countered with 12 points, with Brooklyn Waldal scoring five points, Chloe Boll added four, and Madi Bruggeman scored three for a 12-4 lead with 8:02 left in the half. The Storm’s Adolphson stopped the Crookston run with a three-pointer to score all seven of her team’s points. After a Crookston basket, the Storm scored four points with baskets from Ayla Woinarowicz and Jocelyn Groven to cut the Pirate lead down to two points (14-12). Crookston responded with baskets from Morgan Boll, Bruggeman, and Chloe Boll for a 20-12 lead with four minutes left in the half. Stephen-Argyle answered with baskets by Emily Marquis and Adley McGregor to get within a 20-16 deficit. Crookston ended the half on a 5-0 run with three points from Chloe Boll and a steal and layup by Halle Nicholas as the Pirates took a 25-16 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Crookston’s Chloe Boll started the second half with a pair of baskets for a 29-16 lead. Stephen-Argyle’s Mahren Gjovik made a basket before Crookston’s Bruggeman answered with one of her own for a 31-18 lead. The Storm’s Gjovik buried a three-pointer, and Woinarowicz added a basket to get within a 31-23 deficit. Crookston countered with a Nicholas three-pointer and two Bruggeman free throws for a 36-23 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.

Stephen-Argyle answered with six straight points behind four points from Jocelyn Groven and two points from Adolphson to get within a 36-29 deficit with 6:23 remaining. Crookston, as they did all game, had an answer with 10 straight points as Chloe Boll had five points, three points from Nicholas, and a Waldal basket for a 46-29 lead. In the final four minutes of the game, each team scored four points and Crookston won 50-33.

Crookston improves to 6-16 on the year and will host Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Friday. Stephen-Argyle drops to 6-14 on the year.
