Ada-Borup-West takes early lead and holds on to beat Crookston Softball

The Ada-Borup-West Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning and held on the rest of the way to beat the Crookston Pirate Softball team in a game played at KROX Radio Stadium.

FIRST INNING-
Two of the first three Cougar batters were retired before the inning got away from the Pirates. A single scored a run. After a walk and an error, another run scored for a 2-0 lead. Two more walks allowed another run to score, and a double knocked in two more runs for a 5-0 lead. Another double added two more runs for a 7-0 lead.
Crookston was retired on two groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom of the inning, and ABW took a 7-0 lead into the second inning.

SECOND INNING-
Once again, Crookston recorded two outs before ABW singled, and the next two batters walked to load the bases. The next batter ripped a line drive to center field that allowed four runs to score on a miscue, and the Cougars led 11-0.
Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman was hit by a pitch with one out. After another out, Allysen Wagner walked, and Brylee Darco reached on an error, and a run scored. Brea Lessard reached on another error to score a run to get within an 11-2 deficit. A run scored on a passed ball before Shyuh Burnette singled to score two more runs, and the Pirates were within an 11-5 deficit.
Rilynn Aubol doubled to the first baseline, followed by walks to Peyton Demarais and Bruggeman. A run scored on a passed ball before Brynna Kopecky walked to score another run, and the Pirates trailed 11-7.

THIRD INNING –
ABW answered in the third inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error. After a groundout and a walk, the Cougars scored a run on an error for a 12-7 lead before the Pirates turned a double play to get out of the half-inning.
Crookston’s Wagner led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Lessard walked and Burnette grounded out and a run scored to bring the Pirates within a 12-8 deficit.

FOURTH INNING-
Ada-Borup-West’s leadoff batter in the fourth inning reached on an error, followed by a single and another Pirate error to allow a run to score and the Cougars led 13-8. The next batter struck out before a walk. After the second strikeout of the inning, the Pirates committed an error and another run scored to give ABW a 14-8 lead.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the botoom of the inning with two strikeouts and a ground out.

FIFTH INNING
ABW’s leadoff batter singled before the next three batters were retired on a strikeout and two groundouts.
Crookston added another run in the bottom of the inning as Wagner drew a one-out walk and Darco bunted and reached on an error that allowed a run to score to bring the Pirates within a 14-9 deficit.

SIXTH INNING-
ABW started the inning with a double, a walk, and a single to score a run for a 16-9 lead. A walk was followed by two outs. The next two batters were hit by a pitch to score another run. The next batter walked with bases loaded, and another run scored for an 18-9 Cougar lead.
Crookston answered with another Aubol double, and walks to Demarais and Bruggeman to load the bases. Kopecky laced a line drive to center field to score two runs to get within an 18-11 deficit. After a strikeout, Wagner knocked in a run on a groundout, and the Pirates trailed 18-12.

SEVENTH INNING-
ABW led the inning off with a single, before the next three batters were retired. Crookston needed six runs to tie and seven to win in the bottom of the inning, but were retired in 1-2-3 fashion and the Cougars won the game 18-12.

Crookston drops to 0-3 on the year and were supposed to be at the BGMR Tournament on Saturday, but that has been canceled.
