Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer falls to Hibbing in Saturday Matinee

The Crookston Pirates boys‘ soccer team scored first but were outscored 12-1 in the final 49 minutes of the game by the Hibbing Bluejackets, who won 12-1 at KROX Radio Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

FIRST HALF –
The first half was one of the more competitive first halves that the Pirates have played all year. They were aggressive and getting lots of opportunities. The first great look though came from Hibbing, where Jacob St. George hit the crossbar around the ten-minute mark, but it stayed out. Both teams spread the field and went back-and-forth throughout the rest of the half, and Crookston was able to capitalize first, as Masen Lessard scored to put the Pirates up 1-0. The Pirates were looking to keep this score at 1-0 headed into the break, but the Bluejackets had other plans. Anders Fisher and Levi Steinbrecher each scored in a two-minute span, and before anyone knew it, Hibbing took a 2-1 lead into the second half.

SECOND HALF –
The two goals in the final two minutes must have been very disheartening for Crookston, or Hibbing made many adjustments, because the second half was nowhere near as competitive. The Bluejackets scored two goals in the first four minutes, and though Grant Funk scored on a penalty shot to cut the lead to 4-2, Hibbing responded with two goals separated by 25 seconds, boosting the lead to 6-2. The Pirates then had no answer for the Bluejacket offense; they faced countless runs by the Hibbing wingers, and Crookston’s offense were only able to get one more shot on goal. In the end, Hibbing scored six more times, and this allowed them to pull away for a 12-2 victory.

Crookston drops to 1-9 on the season.
