The KROX Athletes of the Week are the state-bound Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis doubles teams of Catherine Tiedemann and Emma Borowicz. The junior duo will be making their second straight trip to the state tournament after they finished second place in the Section 8A Individual Tennis doubles tournament in Fargo.
Catherine and Emma beat Hannah Samuelson/Aili Toyli of Parkers Prairie 6-0, 6-1, in the first round. They beat Brea Prickett/Brooklyn Broadwell – Thief River Falls 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, they beat teammates Hayden Winjum/Halle Winjum 6-4, 6-2. In the championship, they lost to Khloe Lund and Bela Nelson of TRF 6-2, 7-5, and finished second place.
Borowicz and Tiedemann went 7-3 on the year as a pair with a loss to Hibbing and two losses to Lund and Nelson of Thief River Falls.
Tiedemann was 15-8 in singles and 8-3 in doubles this year. Borowicz was 2-2 in singles and 10-8 in doubles.
Catherine Tiedemann is a two-sport athlete and has played varsity tennis and hockey since seventh grade. She was named She is a member of the LEO Club and the honor roll.
Emma Borowicz is a three-sport athlete and has played varsity tennis since eighth grade, varsity basketball since eighth grade (where she has become one of the top players in the area), and she has run varsity track since seventh grade. She is also a member of the LEO Club, student council, and honor roll.
The girls will play in the first round of the State Class A Double Tennis tournament at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 24, at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis. They will play #5 seed Danielle Thorfinnson/Alissa Thorfinnson of Minnewaska Area in the first round. In the second round, they will play either the #4 seed from Virginia or a team from Litchfield.
