BARNESVILLE USES SECOND HALF RUN TO BEAT CROOKSTON BOYS HOOPS

The Barnesville Trojans used an 11-0 run early in the second half to build a 20-point lead and didn’t look back the rest of the game as they beat the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team 76-58 in a Section 8AA matchup at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF-
Barnesville started the game as good as they could have hoped with a 12-2 run. The run started with Zach Bredman scoring four points, and after a Pirate basket from Hunter Nicholas, the Trojans responded with an Ethan Larson basket, four free throws from Gannon Bolgrean, and a Brady Nosal basket for a 12-2 lead. Barnesville continued to pull away and built a 29-10 lead with five minutes left in the half. Crookston dominated the final four minutes as they ended the half on a 12-0 run. The run started with a Tyler Michaelson three-pointer, Winjum had four points, Nicholas added two free throws before Michaelson made another three-pointer to get within a 29-22 deficit going into halftime

SECOND HALF-
Barnesville took away any momentum Crookston had going into halftime as they started the half on a 6-2 run with all six points scored by Larson. Barnesville built a 43-30 lead before they went on an 11-0 run with five straight points from Bolgrean and back-to-back three-pointers from Zach Bredman for a 54-30 lead with less than 11 minutes remaining. Crookston’s Nicholas grabbed three offensive rebounds on the ensuing possession and finally made the basket while getting fouled for a three-point play, only to have Barnesville respond with a 7-2 run for a 61-35 lead.
Crookston chipped away at the deficit with Isaac Thomford scoring five points, Nicholas chipped in four, and Winjum added a basket to get within a 68-46 deficit. Crookston trailed 73-46 with four minutes remaining and ended the game on a 12-3 run after both teams went deep to the bench. Crookston was led on the run with six points from Thomforde. Carter Fee scored his first varsity points on a basket and followed with a three-pointer for five points, and a free throw by Winjum. Barnesville held on for a 76-58 victory.

Crookston drops to 4-11 on the year and will host Thief River Falls on Tuesday. Barnesville improves to 12-4 on the year.
