Bernadette DeHaan – Obit

Bernadette DeHaan, 90, of Red Lake Falls, MN,died on Tuesday June 11, 2019, at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls, MN, with Father Bob Schreiner presiding and Deacon John Bruggeman. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Red Lake Falls.

Bernadette Evangeline Herold was born May 10, 1929, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, the only child of Henry and Bernadette (Patnode) Herold. She was given her mother’s birth name. Bernadette’s mother died the same day in childbirth, her dad died when she was four. She was raised by her Aunt Eva Bartholomew in Red Lake Falls and graduated in 1948 from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls.

On November 17, 1948, Bernadette was united in marriage to Martin DeHaan in Crookston, MN.

She was employed at various places, including Northwest Regional Library, Thief River Falls, MN as bookmobile librarian which was her favorite place to work.  She also was a homemaker and owned the TasteeFreez in Red Lake Falls.

Bernadette served as Lake Pleasant Treasurer on the township board.  She enjoyed all forms of handi-work(we all benefited from this)and keeping up with technology and computer games. From the day Bernadette learned to read, that became her favorite hobby. She devoured countless books over the years.Books were her teacher which is how she learned her other hobbies. When she wanted to learn to cook, sew, knit, crochet, ceramics, paint or garden, books were brought in stacks at a time. She would have several books going at one time. When technology changed with e-readers, reading was even better.

She is survived by 6 children: Pauline (Carroll) Drechsel, Fergus Falls, MN, David (Laurie) DeHaan, Red Lake Falls, MN, Nancy (friend Warren Uncles) DeHaan,Burrum Heads, Australia, Mary (Allan) Morken, Grand Forks, ND, Steven (Janet) DeHaan, Red Lake Falls, MN and Brian (Kim) DeHaan, Thief River Falls, MN; 12 grandchildren: Karen (Jeremy) Pederson, Cheryl (Chris) Anderson, Benjamin (Patti) DeHaan, Angela (Francisco) Gutierrez, Rachel Kahlow, Selena (Jason) Reed, Meredith (Matthew) Lhotka, Andrew Morken, Vanessa DeHaan, Marissa DeHaan, Kendall DeHaan and Jonathon DeHaan: 20 great grandchildren: Madison, Holly, Brady, Kyra, Katie, Jack, Elsie, Gabby, Hazel, Frank, Roman, Isabella, Audrey, Jack, Claire, Ellen, Alexis, Isaac, Ruby and Grace; In-laws Gerard (Mary Ann) DeHaan, Jacob (Barbara) DeHaan, Elaine “Sis” Boucher and special friend Helvi Ridge;  along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Martin, mother, father, aunt Eva Bartholomew, and cousins Mary Ridge, Cecil Hanson, Harold Bartholomew, James Ridge and Donna Barendse.
