A black bear has been spotted roaming around Woods Addition in Crookston, according to a report from the Crookston Police Department.
Police confirmed they received a call from a resident in the Woods Addition on Tuesday afternoon, reporting a black bear on their neighbor’s security camera sometime on Monday night. A second call came in on Tuesday night about another black bear sighting in the same area.
“Last night, around 9 p.m., we got a second report of it, and that party had actually seen the bear tearing down a bird feeder, and our officers responded, saw the bear, and it ended up wandering in the woods along the river,” said Deputy Chief Nathan Nelson. “That was the last report we had gotten of it last night. I know, personally, I saw on Facebook around 10 p.m. that it was down south of the Irishman’s Shanty, so we kind of took the approach that if it was wandering southward out of town, we just let it be.”
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has been contacted about the sightings, and Crookston police will continue to monitor the situation. Residents are reminded that if they spot a bear in city limits, do not approach it and contact the police immediately.
“It’s something we don’t see every day. So, again, if you don’t approach it, let it kind of do its thing. Generally, they just keep on wandering through town,” said Nelson. “So that was what happened in this case, and we just hope that if it happens again, that’s as easy as it is.”
The video below was recorded by a camera on Hunter Street, showing the bear walking through the yard.
