CHS is teaming up with local farmers to fight hunger once again with the Harvest for Hunger Food, Grain and Fund drive. Since 2011, CHS has raised more than $5.6 million and 3.6 million pounds of food through its Country Operations business units by organizing farmers, ranchers, employees and community members in fun and interactive ways to raise food and funds to fight hunger.
Robert Staehnke, operations manager, said Harvest for Hunger will hold both a Corn Hole and Smear Tournament at the Crookston Eagles Wednesday, March 20 as part of their efforts. “Wednesday we have a smear tournament and a corn hole tournament starting at 11:00 a.m.,” said Staehnke. “There will be a free-will donation lunch, of pulled pork sandwiches starting at noon. The event is open to the public. For every dollar, we raise Country Operations will donate a certain percentage based on what we raised and how many full-time employees we have. The more money we raise the more money we can give to the North Country Food Bank.”
All of the money raised through Harvest for Hunger across the different units is donated to local food banks and food shelves, said Staehnke. “CHS Country Operations started a campaign about 9 years ago,” said Staehnke. “There are about 50 different business units throughout CHS. It’s kind of a competition to see who can raise the most. All of the money raised goes to local food banks and food shelves in that business units’ area.”
The cost to participate in the Corn Hole tournament is $25 per person with the winners receiving a set of corn hole boards. The Smear tournament costs $20 per team with the winners receiving a poker set. There will also be a drawing for a raffle which costs $5 with prizes including a 55-inch TV, 22 inch Weber Premium Charcoal Grill, Echo curved shaft trimmer with speed feed and six gift baskets donated by local businesses.
