CITY COUNCIL GETS AN UPDATE ON THE POOL, AND IS LOOKING TO FILL COUNCIL VACANCY

Crookston City Council

The Crookston City Council met on Monday evening in the city hall chambers.

POOL UPDATE
Crookston Parks and Recreation director Jake Solberg said the pool would be open soon. “The actuators got put in, and they worked all day on them,” said Solberg. The staff at Parks and Recreation immediately started a 24-hour grace period for the actuators to take effect in the pool. When the 24 hours are up, the team will go through the maintenance check. “We have to get the pool balanced chemically,” said Solberg. “We have to get the pumps, and things circulating through that pool and ensure the water is safe to swim.” There is no estimated opening date for the pool. Crookston Parks and Recreation will have no activities scheduled for the week of July 3 to July 7.

CITY COUNCIL IN SEARCH OF A NEW COUNCIL MEMBER
With the recent passing of council member-at-large Wayne Melbye, the commission is looking to fill that position. The position is now deemed vacant. “The council has said this evening that they want to encourage people to apply to be a member at large,” said Crookston City Administrator Corky Reynolds. “We are trying to fill this position at the meeting on July 10, so people should submit their interests in this position. They should also prepare for a potential interview.”

If appointed, the individual will serve an unexpired term which ends December 31, 2024. For consideration regarding this opportunity, please submit a letter of interest to City Hall in person or via HR@crookston.mn.us. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact City Hall at 218-281-1232.

COUNCIL MEMBERS APPROVE ZONING AREAS SURROUNDING THE CROOKSTON AIRPORT
A new automated weather observing system (AWOS) will be implemented at Crookston Airport. For the council to approve the AWOS system, they needed approval from Crookston, Lowell, Fanny, and Parnell townships. The resolution establishes a Joint Airport Zoning Board consisting of the listed townships approved to be a part of the zoning board. The reason for relocating the new AWOS system is that any township lands and property could be affected by planes landing or taking off. “Those who are potentially affected have to be contacted and asked if they want to be a part of the re-zoning,” said Reynolds, “if they say yes, then they become part of the re-zoning board; if they say no or don’t answer it is determined to be a definitive no from that particular township.” The board is essentially recreating a re-zoning commission to deal with the AWOS system at the airport and how it impacts to land in the various townships and Polk County.

SPECIAL EVENT APPLICATION
Crookston has an ordinance that claims mobile food unit vendors must pay a fee to the city when they operate within the city limits. The exception is a civic, nonprofit organization. If the organization is nonprofit, it must request a special event permit, which ultimately waives the city fee. Crazy Days and National Night Out applied for a particular event application, and the council approved. The committee presented more guidelines for these organizations and events. “We’ve used criteria of the one-day event, it’s broadly based on the community, and the civic organizations are bringing the sponsors,” said Reynolds.

OFFICER ALEX RUDNIK WAS SWORN INTO CROOKSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

Newly hired officer Alex Rudnik was sworn into the police department last night at the council meeting. 13 of his fellow officers and his wife and two daughters were in attendance.

CONSENT AGENDA
The consent agenda included approving the City Council meeting minutes from June 5 and 12. It also approved bills and disbursements for $136,694.90 and a fitting gas license for Lee Plumbing and Heating. These were all approved.

The next City Council meeting will be on July 10 at 5:30 p.m.
