The Crookston Pirate 5th-grade girls’ basketball team capped off their season with a strong showing at the 33rd annual Crookston Youth Basketball Association Tournament, finishing as champions for the second consecutive year.
In their opening game, the Pirates faced a tough Roseau team, holding on late to secure a 28-22 victory. In the semifinals, they faced the Warren Alvarado Oslo Ponies and secured a 27-15 win.
In the championship game, Crookston beat the Jaguars 33-21 to claim the title.
Members of the team are Ashlyn Goering, Freya Brekken, Lily Griffin, Annie Kollin, Penny Smith, Evelyn Applequist, Mireyah Magdaleno, and Valor Klinnert. The team is coached by Erik Griffin.
Crookston finishes with a 17-3 record. Throughout the year, they competed in five tournaments and earned first-place finishes in four of them.
“The growth and teamwork displayed by the girls throughout the season were clear, and their effort in this tournament was a perfect reflection of their hard work,” said Coach Erik Griffin. “Congratulations to the Crookston Pirate 5th-grade girls for their tournament victory and an impressive season. “Their teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship were on full display throughout the year.”
