CROOKSTON AMERICAN LEGION POST 20 BASEBALL SWEEPS TWIN VALLEY

The Crookston American Legion Post 20 Baseball team beat Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal Post 431 in the first game of a doubleheader behind Blake Melsa’s 15 strikeouts for a 4-2 victory and in Game two, Isaiah Donarski struck out seven and Crookston offense hammered out 11 hits in two inning to complete the sweep with a 15-2 victory at Jim Karn Field in Crookston. 

GAME ONE – 

FIRST INNING
Blake Melsa got the start on the mound for Crookston and struck out the first three Twin Valley batters.
Then Crookston didn’t waste any time as Matt Contreras led off with a single and stole second base. Gavyn Hlucny singled, and Contreras scored. Hlucny scored on a passed ball to give Crookston a 2-0 lead.

SECOND INNING
Crookton retired Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal in 1-2-3 fashion with a line out and two more strikeouts.
Crookston’s Carter Fee led off the bottom of the inning with a walk before the next three batters were retired.

THIRD INNING
Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning with a strikeout, pop-out, and another strikeout.
Crookston added another run in the bottom of the inning when Contreras was hit by a pitch. Conteras stole second base and moved over to third base when the next batter struck out. Hlucny singled to score a run, and Crookston led 3-0.

FOURTH INNING
The leadoff Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal batter reached on an error. The next batter grounded out before the next batter hit a ground ball deep in the hole, and Crookston’s shortstop stopped the ball, but there wasn’t a play at first, and a run scored on the play.
The first two Crookston batters flew out and struck out before Isaiah Donarski walked and advanced to second base on a balk. Nolan Cassavant hit a ground ball to shortstop, and he misplayed the ball, allowing Cassavant to reach and Donarski to score for a 4-1 Crookston lead.

FIFTH INNING
Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with a ground out, strikeout, and line out.
Crookston was also retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two flyouts and a line out, and Crookston led 4-1 after five innings.

SIXTH INNING
Crookston’s Melsa continued to deal on the mound as he struck out all three batters in the inning for a total of 13 strikeouts in the game.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two line-outs and a pop-out.

SEVENTH INNING
Twin Valley/Ulen-Hitterdal tried to mount a comeback with a single and a double to get within a 4-2 deficit. The next two batters were retired with a fly-out and a strikeout. After a batter was hit by a pitch, Melsa struck out the next batter for his 15th strikeout of the game and a 4-2 Crookston victory.

GAME TWO

FIRST INNING
Twin Valley/Ulen Hitterdal attempted to start the second game on the right foot with a walk and two stolen bases right after, but pitcher Isaiah Donarski struck out two batters to prevent any runs from scoring.
Crookston started the inning with a leadoff walk for Contreras, and Greyson Ecker was hit by pitch. After a fielder’s choice, Blake Melsa singled to center field to score the first run of the game. Lucas Perala tripled, scoring Hlucny (who reached on a fielder’s choice, and Melsa tried to score, but he was out at home.  Carter Fee singled, an errant pickoff throw brought in another run. Another wild pitch brought in the fourth run of the inning, and Crookston led 4-0.

SECOND INNING
Isaiah Donarski dominated the second inning, retiring Twin Valley/Ulen Hitterdal 1-2-3 with three strikeouts for five total.
Donarski led off the bottom of the inning with a double. After a strikeout, a line drive by Contreras deflected off the glove of the second baseman to put runners on the corners. An errant throw on a stolen base allowed a run to score, and advanced a runner to third. Ecker and Hlucny singled, and another run scored on an error. A Perala double drove in two more runs for a 9-0 lead. Carter Fee walked, and a wild pitch and Nolan Cassavant singled to score another run for an 11-0 lead.  After a pop-out, Wyatt Marsyla and Contreras were hit by pitches. Ecker singled to score a run, another run scored on a wild pitch and Hlucny followed with a single to score a run for a 15-0 lead.

THIRD INNING
Donarski retired the first two batters of the inning via a strikeout and groundout. After a walk, a wild pitch allowed the runner to advance to third. Another walk placed runners on the corners, and a stolen base made it second and third. Back-to-back wild pitches then scored the first two runs of the game for Twin Valley/Ulen Hitterdal. After two more walks, a hit by pitch loaded the bases before a strikeout ended the frame and Crookston won the game 15-2 by the 10-run rule. 

Crookston improves to 3-3 on the year and will travel to Fertile on Wednesday, June 19 at 6:00 PM.
