The Hawley Nuggets Wyatt Jetvig hammered three home runs and had a tremendous throw from centerfield to get an out at home to lead his team to a 9-5 victory over the Crookston Pirate Baseball team 9-5 in a Section 8AA game played in Hawley.
FIRST INNING-
Crookston’s Dexter Janek started the game with a walk and a stolen base. Greyson Ecker singled to left field to score Janek for a 1-0 lead. After the next two batters were retired, Lucas Perala doubled to the left-center field gap to score a run for a 2-0 lead.
Hawley got things going with one out when Dillon Hoekstra singled, and Wyatt Jetvig doubled and the Nuggets had runners at second and third base. After a strikeout, Anderson Brager walked to load the bases. The next batter popped out to the pitch and the Pirates got out of the jam.
SECOND INNING-
The first Pirate batter was retired before Tarek Siegle walked and Jaron Knutson was hit by a pitch. The next two batters were retired.
Hawley led off the bottom of the inning with a Cooper Roering single before Jaxon Menke hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but the Pirates committed an error and everyone was safe. With runners at first and second with one out, Crookston’s Hlucny retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.
THIRD INNING –
Crookston’s Gavin Hlucny led off the inning with a double, and Isaiah Donarski walked. After an out, Cody Demarais walked to load the bases. Davin Janek hit a fly ball to right field, allowing Hlucny to tag up and score for a 3-0 lead.
Hawley answered in a big way with a lead-off Wyatt Jetvig solo homerun to get within a 3-1 deficit. Becker reached on a walk and advanced to second base on an error on a pickoff move. Brager hit a ground ball and reached on an error and a run scored to bring the Nuggets within a 3-2 deficit. Strawsell reached on an error and later scored on another Pirate error to tie the game at 3-3.
FOURTH INNING-
Crookston’s Knutson led off the inning with a walk before Dexter Janek hit a line drive to left-center field. The ball clearly bounced about 10 feet in front of the fence, then over the fence. The center fielder raised his hands for a ground-rule double, but the umpire said it was a home run, much to everyone’s surprise, and the Pirates took a 5-3 lead.
Hawley answered in the bottom of the inning when Hadley walked, stole second, and moved to third base on a passed ball. Hoekstra hit a fly to right field deep enough to score Hadley to get within a 5-4 deficit. Jetvig pounced on the first pitch and absolutely crushed a fly ball over the left field fence for his second homerun of the game for a 5-5 tie.
FIFTH INNING-
The first two Pirates struck out before Jaron Knutson singled and stole second base. Dexter Janek singled to center field, and Hawley’s Jetvig fielded the ball and threw a perfect one-hopper to home plate, and the catcher made the grab and tag to get the Pirate for the third out of the inning.
Hawley used the momentum from the big Jetvig play to end the top half of the inning into the bottom. Roering led off with a double, Jaxon Menke singled and Roering scored on a passed ball. Hadley knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly for a 7-5 lead. Hoekstra singled before Jetvig blasted a fly ball over the left field fence for his third straight home run to give the Nuggets a 9-5 lead.
