CADEN OSBORN SCORES HIS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AS PIRATE BOYS HOOPS BEAT TRF

The Crookston Pirates Boy’s Basketball team used a 40 point second half and used the 1,000th career point from Caden Osborn to beat the Thief River Falls Prowlers 69-55 in a Section 8AA matchup at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game by getting the ball inside to Caden Osborn and he scored the first four points of the game. Thief River Falls responded with an 11-3 run with four different players scoring for an 11-7 lead five minutes into the game. Crookston battled back with a Jack Garmen three-pointer and after a Prowler basket, the Pirates followed with an Osborn three-point play to tie the game at 13-13 with 11:43 to go in the half. Thief River Falls broke the tie with a Brevyn Lingen three-pointer and they held the lead for several minutes and led 20-17 with seven minutes remaining in the half. Crookston started a run with a Carter Bruggeman basket, followed by a Walker Winjum basket to give the Pirates a 21-20 lead. The Pirates led 23-22 and had a chance to expand the lead after a Prowler personal foul and a technical foul. Crookston only made one of four free throw attempts and led 24-22.  “That was the key I thought,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “Getting Storm Manning in foul trouble with his third and then picking up the fourth on the technical foul was big.” The teams battled back-and-forth the rest of the half and were tied at 25, 27, and 29 before Thief River Falls’ Lingen made a layup right before the buzzer sounded and the Prowlers took a 31-29 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Thief River Falls expanded its lead with a Zach Praska for a 34-29 lead.  A minute later, Crookston was trailing 35-31 when they picked up their play and went on a 6-0 run with four of the points scored by Osborn and Jack Garmen added a basket to give the Pirates a 37-35 lead over three minutes into the half.  The game was tied at 37 with 11:30 left in the game when Crookston went on 13-3 run sparked by a Walker Winjum three-pointer followed by a basket by Osborn and less than 30 seconds later Caden grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in for his 1,000th career point.  Osborn becomes the ninth Pirate Boys basketball player to reach the 1,000 point milestone. “Caden has been a gym rat and likes to play and he has scored a lot the last couple of years,” said Coach Garmen. “He is a humble young man and wanted to do it in a win and we did it.”  After the excitement of the milestone, Osborn followed it up with a three-pointer from the top of the key and the run was capped with a Brady Butt three-pointer for a 50-40 lead with 7:27 left in the game.  The teams battled back-and-forth the rest of the way with what seemed to be limited defense, and Crookston slowly pulled away to win the game 69-55.  “I thought we played a very good second half,” said Coach Garmen. “We rebounded well and picked up the defense a little bit in the second half.  I thought we played a solid game with a good effort from the kids and we did some nice things down the stretch.  It is always nice to beat a rival.”

Crookston improves to 8-11 on the year and will host Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Monday.  Thief River Falls drops to 9-9 on the year.
