DGF REBELS PULL AWAY TO BEAT PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL, NICK GARMEN BREAKS CAREER 3 POINT RECORD

The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels ended the first half on a 17-4 run to take a 15 point lead at halftime and never looked back on their way to a 73-53 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team in a Section 8AA game played at the Crookston High School gymnasium.  Nick Garmen made four three-pointers in the game and now has 195 made three-pointers in his career to become the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball Career three-point leader, breaking Ryan Porter’s 191 three-pointers made from 2012-2015.

Crookston took a 6-2 lead to start the game with baskets from Caden Osborn, Jack Garmen, and Brady Butt.  DGF answered with a 7-3 run to tie the game at nine four minutes into the game. DGF continued to play well and built a 21-13 lead behind some solid defense and a quick strike offense.  The Rebels held onto a 28-18 lead with 7:45 left in the first half before Crookston’s Nick Garmen started a 7-0 run with a basket, Caden Osborn added a basket and Nick ended the run with a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 28-25 deficit with 6:10 to go in the half.  The teams exchanged baskets with a two-pointer for DGF and a three-pointer from Crookston’s Josh Bernia to bring the Pirates within a 30-28 deficit with less than six minutes on the clock.  DGF, as they did all game, had an answer and finished the final five minutes of the half on a 17-4 run to take a 47-32 lead into halftime.  “We played well early on, but I don’t feel we played very well defensively.  We knew what they were going to run and we still couldn’t get stops and weren’t quick enough or smart enough to step in front of them,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “They had too many easy ones and we’re not getting easy ones.  We have to be stronger with the ball to handle their pressure.  We had a big hole at halftime and we knew it was going to be tough to get back into the game.”

Crookston started the second half like they wanted by going on a 10-2 run with eight of those points scored by Nick Garmen and the Pirates trailed 49-42 almost five minutes into the half.  “We had a good start to the half, which was nice to see,” said Coach Garmen. “We got it under 10 points and Nick was shooting well.”  Once again, DGF had an answer with a 9-0 run with baskets by four different players (Justin Wang, Tanner Tahran, Aiden Leach, and a three-pointer from Owen Leach) for a 58-42 lead halfway through the half.  DGF slowly built on their lead the rest of the game as Crookston continued to struggle on the offensive end and the Rebels coasted to a 73-53 victory.  “It was a tough one tonight,” said Coach Garmen. “We need to find a way to play better defense and not let our opponents cut to the basket and get easy points.”

Crookston drops to 6-9 on the year and will travel to Warroad on Friday, a game you can hear on KROX.  DGF improves to 10-9 on the year.
