The East Grand Forks Green Wave led by nine points at halftime and scored 64 points in the second half on their way to a 103-69 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team in a Section 8AA game played in Crookston.
East Grand Forks came out and basically ran Crookston off the floor and took a 24-4 lead with Tanner Campos scoring the first seven Green Wave points. Crookston finally started to settle down and got their offense going with some strong drives to the basket mixed with some good ball movement and free throws and went on a 14-0 run to get back into the game behind a basket from Caden Osborn, two Carter Bruggeman free throws, a Nick Garmen three-pointer which was followed by a steal and layup for Nick to cap the run and the Pirates trailed 24-18. “We settled down nicely there and we felt like we had a chance at that point,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “I thought we did a better job of handling the ball in the latter part of the half and we played better defense.” The teams played even the rest of the half and East Grand Forks took a 39-30 lead into halftime. “We were back in the game at that point,” said Coach Garmen. “Only trailing by nine points after a bad start was good and we felt better going into halftime.”
East Grand Forks started the second half with suffocating defense and they turned Crookston turnovers and missed shots into easy baskets and outscored Crookston 15-4 in the first three minutes of the half for a 54-34 lead. Crookston’s Jack Garmen started to heat up and made three three-pointers in as many trips down the floor, but East Grand Forks continued to dominate and slowly built a 30-point lead late in the game. The only question in the final minutes was if the Green Wave would score 100 points in the game. They scored their 100th point of the game when Bryson Statsny scored on a layup to give Eat Grand Forks a 100-66 lead with a couple of minutes left in the game and they ended up with a 103-69 victory. In the two games against Crookston, East Grand Forks scored 101 and 103 points in the victories. “We needed to come out better in the second half and we can’t give up 64 points in a half like we did and we have struggled to stop the drive like we did tonight,” said Coach Garmen. “East Grand Forks has some good players and they like to run and we don’t have the players that can do that. It is tough to give up 100 to anybody, let alone the Green Wave.”
Crookston drops to 8-13 on the year and will travel to Barnesville on Monday. East Grand Forks improves to 17-4 on the year.
