ADAM TONSFELDT’S 36 POINTS LEADS BARNESVILLE OVER PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Barnesville Trojans were without Hunter Zenzen (who will play football at Iowa State in the fall) after he had surgery on his hand last week and it didn’t seem to matter because another pretty good football player, Adam Tonsfeldt, went off for 36 points and Barnesville used a strong second half to beat the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team 84-68 in a Section 8AA match-up played in Barnesville.

FIRST HALF
Barnesville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after baskets from Kaden Zenzen and Adam Tonsfeldt. Crookston scored their first points of the game when Carter Bruggeman made two free throws two minutes into the game. The teams exchanged baskets before the Pirates got the hot hand with a Walker Winjum steal for a layup, and after a Barnesville basket, he made a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within an 8-7 deficit. Barnesville answered with a bucket before Jack Garmen took his second charge of the game and followed it up with a basket and back-to-back three-pointers for a 7-0 by himself and Crookston led 15-10 seven minutes into the game. “It was a nice run, and we had moments where we played well,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. ” Barnesville answered with an 11-3 run, led by 5’6 junior guard Adam Tonsfeldt’s eight points, for a 21-18 lead halfway through the half. Barnesville led 31-23 with over three minutes left in the half when Crookston went on a 7-0 run with baskets from Caden Osborn and Easton Tangquist, and a three-pointer from Jack Garmen and the Pirates trailed 31-30. Barnesville answered with five points before Crookston’s Osborn made a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, and the Trojans took a 36-33 lead into halftime. “That was a big shot for us right before halftime,” said Coach Garmen. “I thought we had some momentum going into the second half.”

SECOND HALF –
Barnesville’s Kaden Zenzen, who sat most of the first half because of foul trouble, scored the first points of the half before Crookston responded with back-to-back baskets from Carter Bruggeman and Caden Osborn and the Trojans led 38-37 two minutes into the half. “We had a good start to the second half,” said Coach Garmen. “We had some defensive stops and made some shots.” Barnesville blew the game open with a 16-4 run over the next three minutes behind Tonsfeldt’s 11 points for a 54-41 lead. Barnesville led 62-50 halfway through the half when they went on a 7-0 run for a 69-50 lead. The Trojans led 80-57 when Crookston’s Winjum made two free throws, and Brady Butt rattled home back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Pirates within an 80-65 deficit in the final minute, but Barnesville held on for an 84-68 victory. “Barnesville came away with a lot of the 50/50 balls with their hustle,” said Coach Garmen. “Tonsfeldt is a tough match for us, and we didn’t have an answer for him, and we struggled with Zenzen in the second half. We need to move better than we did tonight. I thought we were a little sluggish, and that wasn’t good, especially against a team like Barnesville.”

Crookston drops to 5-9 on the year and will travel to Climax-Fisher on Thursday for a game in Fisher. Barnesville improves to 10-3 on the year.
