TRF uses strong start to the second half to beat the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team trailed by five points at halftime, but they didn’t score for the first five minutes of the second half as the Thief RIver Falls Prowlers pulled away for a 71-58 Section 8AA victory at the Lincoln High School gymnasium in Thief River Falls.

FIRST HALF
Thief River Falls scored the first two points of the game on two Wyatt Nelson free throws before Crookston responded with a Nolan Johnson free throw and Reggie Winjum three-pointer for a 4-2 lead. The teams were tied at 4 and 9 before TRF made a pair of free throws for an 11-9 lead. Crookston’s Winjum made a three-pointer for a 12-11 lead with 11:43 left in the half, and the Prowlers countered with a 9-0 run with four players scoring to take a 20-12 lead. Crookston finally broke the run with a Josh Hesby basket, breaking the Pirates’ six-minute scoring drought. After a TRF basket, Crookston’s Winjum answered with five straight points to get the Pirates within a 22-19 deficit with four minutes remaining. The teams exchanged baskets before the Prowlers scored four straight points for a 28-21 lead. Crookston’s Fee scored four points to bring the Pirates within a 28-25 deficit. In the final two minutes, TRF’s Bridger Wilcox had five points, and his team took a 33-28 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Thief River Falls started the second half on an 8-0 run, with Wyatt Nelson and Wilcox scoring three points each, and Grineland added a basket, and the Prowlers led 41-28 just shy of five minutes into the half. Crookston’s first points of the second half came when Beau Smith made a basket just over five minutes into the half. The teams exchanged baskets before Winjum scored five points to get within a 46-38 deficit with 11:55 remaining. TRF pulled away with an 11-2 run for a 54-38 lead. Crookston slowly chipped away at the deficit and with four minutes left in the game, Carter Fee made a three-pointer. After a TRF basket, Fee made another three-pointer and Winjum made two free throws and the Pirates trailed 63-53 with 2:36 to go. Crookston wasn’t able to keep the offense going as the Prowlers finished the final two mintues of the game on a 6-3 run to win the game 71-58.

Crookston drops to 3-16 on the year and will travel to Erskine on Tuesday to take on the Win-E-Mac Patriots. TRF improves to 11-9 on the year.
