CROOKSTON BOY’S GOLF TAKES 5TH PLACE AT FERGUS FALLS

The Pirates Boys Golf team traveled to Fergus Falls on Friday to compete in their invitational at Pebble Lake Golf Course. Crookston came in fifth place out of five teams with a score of 354. Moorhead won the meet with an outstanding score of 297. “We knew the teams in this meet were really good, and some of the kids were going to go out there and try to shoot par. And I think one-shot a 66, which is impressive,” said the Pirate Boy’s Head Golf Coach Steve Kofoed. “I do think we shot well today. We really did.”

The Pirates were led again by Kaleb Thingelstad, who had the low team score of 82. He had a couple of triple-bogeys which added to his score. “It could have been around a 77 or 78, but he had a couple of triples,” said Coach Kofoed. “They are easy fixes. One was just a bad shot that went out of bounds, and the other was on a par three where he was in between clubs. If he would have gone with the longer club, I think he would have avoided the sand and would have been fine.”

Jaxon Wang was just a few shots behind Kaleb with an 86. It is an improvement from the 90 he shot in their previous meet in Crookston. “I think Jaxon is figuring out how to score out on the course,” explained Coach Kofoed. “He made some really good shots out there today.”

The Pirates also used scores from Blaine Andringa, who shot an 88, and Brannon Tangquist, with a 98. “The course in Fergus Falls is a lot bigger than a lot of the courses we play,” said Coach Kofoed. He went on to say that, “It has a lot more hills than a course as we have in Crookston, and that makes it a little more difficult sometimes. You have to start taking in elevation, and that throws off the distances on your clubs.”

The Pirate Boy’s Golf team will be back in action on Tuesday in East Grand Forks when they play the Valley Golf course. “The course can play very tough, especially when the wind is blowing around,” said Coach Kofoed. “The front nine and back nine are like two different courses with trees and big greens on one and the river and smaller greens on the other.
Crookston has added another meet next week in Park Rapids. “We did pick up a meet next Friday in Park Rapids, so that will be good for us,” explains Coach Kofoed. He added, “I think the guys are starting to get more of a feel for their clubs and distance. It is hard for me to remember all 20 guys distances for each club, so it’s up to them to figure those things out, and they are getting locked in.”
