CROOKSTON BOY’S HOCKEY ALLOWS 4 UNANSWERED GOALS IN LOSS TO DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team couldn’t overcome five penalties and limited scoring opportunities in a 4-1 loss against the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game played at the Crookston Sports Center.

1st Period –
Crookston didn’t generate much offense in the opening period, but the Pirates made the most of their opportunities. 7:36 into the opening period, with Crookston on the power-play, Joey Doda registered the team’s first shot on goal and found the back of the net, off assists from Jack Doda and Leyton Salentine, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. “That (chemistry) is to be expected,” said Hardy of the Doda brothers combining for the first goal. “They’ve been playing hockey together for a long time whether it’s knee hockey in the basement or out here. Jack had a swipe at it and Joey buried it.” Detroit Lakes evened the score with 3:59 to play in the first period when Alex Bren took a pass from Hunter Burnside a fired a shot past Crookston goaltender Carter Nelson tying the score at 1-1 going into the second period. “I thought we had a good start tonight,” explained Hardy. “We’re a little short handed tonight and we probably needed one or two more goals to help us out as the game went on. With how short our bench is due to injuries right now we kind of get gassed as the game goes on.”

2nd Period –
Detroit Lakes took its first lead with 11:30 to play in the second period after an even start to the frame. Alex Bren netted his second goal of the evening with a shot from behind the goal line that ricocheted off the back of Crookston’s goalie and into the net, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead.  1:29 later, Spencer Bergman added to Detroit Lakes’ lead with a shot from in close for the Lakers’ third straight goal increasing the visitors’ lead to 3-1. Detroit Lakes goaltender Jack Hines stopped all 10 shots he faced in the second period to preserve the Lakers’ 3-1 lead going into the final period. “They banged one goal off of Carter’s back, and that’s just a sweet play that doesn’t happen very often,” added Hardy. “It just felt like they were buzzing us, and we were kind of all over the place. I almost called a timeout earlier, and now I wish I would have. You could feel their second goal coming for that period. After I called out timeout, I thought we played better the rest of the period.”

3rd Period –
Detroit Lakes dominated possession in the final period aided by several Crookston penalties, but the Lakers were unable to capitalize with the extra skater on the ice. The visitors did add one more goal with 1:07 to play when Beau Boehne deposited a shot into the empty net. Detroit Lakes goaltender Jack Hines stopped the last 29 shots he faced after allowing a goal on Crookston’s first shot as the Lakers closed out a convincing 4-1 win. “We really didn’t have an opportunity to get the puck into their end,” noted Hardy. “It was a tough period. It was exactly how we didn’t want it to go. I like our guys to play hard, but there is an edge there. It wasn’t a great period for us. I can’t fault the effort. The guys were working hard, but when we’re short benched like this, we’ve got to get some goals early and then try to pull back. I do think we can still pull some positives away from tonight.”

Crookston falls to 1-15 overall. The Pirates return to the ice on Saturday when Crookston travels to Breezy Point to take on Northern Lakes at 3:00 P.M. Detroit Lakes improves to 8-8-2.
