CROOKSTON BOY’S HOCKEY TAKES DOWN LAKE OF THE WOODS 6-3

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Hockey team continued their win streak on Friday night, defeating the Lake of the Woods Bears 6-3 for a Section 8A victory.

FIRST PERIOD –
The first period was filled with a ton of scoring, and it started with Kadin Edwards jamming a goal past the Bears starting goaltender giving Crookston a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the game. It was the 2nd goal of the season for Edwards. A few short minutes later Lake of the Woods would tie the game on a bouncing puck that hoped over the pad of Jaren Bailey and into the back of the net. Crookston has gotten great production from their top line throughout the season, but it was the second and third lines that were making the difference in the first frame. Michael Bochow would put the Pirates back in front on a goal from the left slot giving Crookston a 2-1 lead with 6:40 left until the end of the period. It was also Bochow’s 2nd goal of the season. The Bears would answer back with a strong forecheck and tie the game once again at 2-2 on a goal from Charlie Eck. The scoring still wasn’t finished for the period, as Jack Doda would score his 25th goal of the season on an assist from Carter Trudeau, putting Crookston back in front 3-2 with under four minutes left in the period. Lake of the Woods would be called for a late penalty in the frame on a trip, giving the Pirates the game’s first Power Play. Crookston was unable to score before the period ended, and they would have 1:16 left on the Power Play to start the second period with a 3-2 lead. The Pirates outshot the Bears 12-10 in the first seventeen minutes.

SECOND PERIOD –
The Pirates were unable to capitalize on the Power Play to start the period, and the Bears were able to get back to full strength. At the 5:09 mark of the period Lake of the Woods would tie the game once again on Charlie Eck’s second goal of the night. The rest of the period was controlled by Crookston but they wouldn’t reclaim the lead until the end of the period. The Bears would be called for another penalty with just over three minutes remaining giving Crookston their second Power Play of the night. Right before the Power Play was expiring, the Pirates would dump a puck in deep and Ryan Street would win the race to the puck behind the net. He would keep the play alive giving Brandon Colborn an opportunity to skate in and take the puck. Colborn would fake to his left, and the Lake of the Woods starting goaltender would lose track of the puck, allowing Colborn to skate to the other side of the net for an easy wrap-around goal to put Crookston in front 4-3. It was just the 11th Power Play goal of the season for the Pirates, and for Colborn, it was his 4th goal of the year. That would finish the scoring in the middle frame and Crookston would take a 4-3 lead into the final period of play. The Pirates were able to limit the Bears chances in the second period, and through two frames, Crookston had outshot Lake of the Woods 22-14.

THIRD PERIOD –
The third period was absolutely dominated by the Pirates. Crookston got off to a quick start applying a ton of offensive pressure and not allowing Lake of the Woods any good scoring chances. At the 5:35 mark of the period, the Pirates would take a two-goal lead on a goal from Carter Trudeau, set up by Jack Doda. It was the 13th goal of the season for Trudeau, and it gave Crookston a 5-3 lead. Jackson Demarais would be called for a penalty on the next shift after the goal, but the Bears couldn’t muster a shot on goal, and the Pirates were able to get back to even strength. Crookston would add one more goal at the 9:36 mark, on Michael Bochow’s second of the night, and that would make it 6-3 Crookston. The Bears struggled to find offense during the final frame, and that allowed the Pirates to coast the rest of the way to a 6-3 victory. Jaren Bailey would earn the win for Crookston saving 17 shots and surrendering just 3 goals. Jayce Lucek suffered the loss for Lake of the Woods saving 34 shots and allowing 6 goals.

Crookston improves to 5-16-1 on the season and will host International Falls tomorrow to wrap up a busy week. We will have the game on the KROX Live Stream starting with the RiverView Health pregame show at 1:30 p.m. and the drop of the puck at 2:00 p.m.
Lake of the Woods falls to 4-17 with the loss.
