CROOKSTON BOY’S SOCCER SHUTOUT IN SEASON OPENER AGAINST DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirates Boy’s soccer team was unable to generate a shot on goal in a 4-0 loss against the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game at the Crookston High School Soccer Field.

The Lakers dominated possession throughout the match peppering Crookston goalkeeper Kaleb Thingelstad with 18 shots on goal. “I think Kaleb Thingelstad did a great job in goal today,” said first-year head coach Lon Boike. “He had a lot of saves. Defense, for the most part, was a strength of ours.” Detroit Lakes utilized an early offensive breakthrough to earn a lead they would protect the rest of the match. In the seventh minute, Lucas Schwan headed a cross from Ben Heimark into the back of the net giving Detroit Lakes a 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled their lead before halftime when Ben Heimark dribbled in and fired a shot into the back of the net putting Detroit Lakes in front 2-0 in the 29th minute. “Something we need to work on is our passing,” noted Boike. “Particularly our short passing. We can do that. I thought we communicated pretty well.”

In the second half, the Lakers added two quick goals putting the Pirates away. Kobe Braukmann tapped in a shot from just outside the goal line after a pass from Josh Brahmer giving the visitors a 3-0 lead in the 43rd minute. One minute later, Thomas Fritz capitalized on a failed Crookston clearance slotting a shot past the Pirates’ Thingelstad securing Detroit Lakes’ 4-0 win. “They scored in spurts of goals,” added Boike. “We were out of position a few times, but overall it wasn’t terrible. We have some guys out. At least four starters, that would probably be starting, are out right now. At one time we had three eighth-graders out there and a couple of ninth graders, so that was really good experience for those guys to get the experience of varsity play. Overall, I was pretty happy and now we have a base of where we need to work on things and try to get better.”

Crookston falls to 0-1 and will return to the pitch on Saturday, August 24 when the Pirates host Fergus Falls at 11:00 A.M. Detroit Lakes improves to 1-0.
