The defending Section 8A champion and state runner-up Bemidji Lumberjacks scored six first-half goals and cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team in a match played in Bemidji.
Bemidji started the scoring with a goal by one of the top players in the state, Silas Hess nine minutes into the game. The Lumberjacks added another goal six minutes later when Ben Hess found the back of the net. The scoring parade continued for the talented Lumberjacks as Logan Mitchell tallied two goals in a nine-minute span for a 4-0 lead. A minute after the second Mitchell goal, the Lumberjacks’ Ethan Mock scored his first goal of the game and added his second goal four minutes later to give Bemidji a 6-0 lead going into halftime. “I thought our guys played pretty well and made some nice plays,” said Pirate Coach Lon Boike. “Things got pretty tough for us because Bemidji is so good, but we actually didn’t play that bad.”
In the second half, Crookston switched their defensive formation and it seemed to help because Bemidji only scored two goals. One of the goals was scored by Silas Hess which was his second of the game and 99th career goal! “We made the switch and only gave up two goals by putting more emphasis on putting people back on defense,” said Coach Boike. “The only problem with the switch was it meant we weren’t going to be as strong offensively.” Crookston played hard until the end, but they were only able to muster one shot on goal in the game and Bemidji held on for the 8-0 victory. “Bemidji is just an outstanding team. They are a fundamentally solid team, pass well, and work so well together,” said Coach Boike. “They do everything so well and they made it tough for us. It was fun to watch a team like that and it gives us something to measure ourselves.”
Crookston drops to 0-7 on the year and will travel to Detroit Lakes on Tuesday. Bemidji improves to 5-1 on the year.
