The Crookston Pirates Boys’ Soccer team dropped a high-scoring game 7-4 to Fergus Falls Hillcrest Academy in a Section 8A matchup played in Fergus Falls.
The Crookston Pirates appeared destined for a lop-sided loss after a challenging first half with Fergus Falls Hillcrest scoring four times during the opening forty minutes of play. Fergus Falls Hillcrest struck first just 8:04 into the match when Markus Fluge finished off a pass from Eirik Primavera giving the Comets a 1-0 lead. Eirik Primavera scored Fergus Falls Hillcrest’s second goal ten minutes later with an assist from Nick Foss giving the hosts a 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 3-0 after Iver Honningdal slotted a shot past Crookston goalkeeper Casey Tiedemann. Just before halftime, the Comets added a fourth goal when Honningdal scored for a second time thanks to the second assist of the half sent in by Primavera. “We weren’t talking to each other,” said Crookston head coach Don Cox of the difficult first-half. “Communication wasn’t there, passing wasn’t there. In the second half, we got a lot more combinations going, balls coming out of the backfield in the air towards midfield so we were making better runs with better attacks and more people coming back.”
Fergus Falls Hillcrest added a fifth goal under two minutes into the second half when James Cho shot a pass from Ian So into the net expanding the Comets’ lead to 5-0. Crookston answered with its first goal of the match just thirty-seconds later as Jacob Brunelle scored thanks to a pass from Eric Delorme shrinking the deficit to 5-1. “It was a pass from Delorme to Brunelle,” explained Cox. “Brunelle was on the far left side and Jacob took it down, shot it and got it past the keeper on the left-hand side and it was a nice one to start the half there.” Fergus Falls Hillcrest responded with a sixth goal scored by Eirik Primavera, his second of the night, giving the hosts a 6-1 edge. The Pirates followed with two-straight goals, both scored by Noah Kiel. In the 51st minute, Kiel took a long clearance by goalkeeper Ben Andringa and shot it past the Fergus Falls Hillcrest goalkeeper making it 6-2. “Ben got a beautiful boot down the field and Kiel got a hold of it and got a good shot off and got it in past the keeper,” explained Cox. Eric Delorme picked up his second assist with a pass to Kiel that was converted into Crookston’s third goal in the 52nd minute. “Delorme got a ball and scooted it up high and it skipped of Kiel’s head and into the net for us,” added Cox.
Fergus Falls Hillcrests’ Markus Fluge netted the Comets’ seventh and final goal in the 57th minute to grow the lead to 7-3. With under four minutes remaining, Sam Overgaard scored the match’s final goal off an assist from Noah Kiel to close Crookston’s gap to 7-4. “Sam got a nice relay from Kiel with about 3:30 left in the match and got our fourth score for us so we were making a fairly decent comeback coming back in on that second half,” Cox elaborated. The Pirates second-half rally would end there as Fergus Falls Hillcrest secured the 7-4 win on their home field.
The Pirates fall to 0-4 this season and return to the pitch on Saturday traveling to Walker to take on Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at 10 p.m. “If we had put the points up in the first half that we did in the second half it would have been a pretty close game here,” Cox summarized. “We played much better in the second half.”
