CROOKSTON BOY’S SOCCER SHUT OUT BY EAST GRAND FORKS

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Soccer team allowed two goals in the first six minutes and trailed the rest of the way in a 6-0 loss to the East Grand Forks Green Wave on Tuesday afternoon at the Crookston High School soccer fields.

FIRST HALF –
The Green Wave got their offense moving right away, as sophomore Yaya Ismail scored a goal just 28 seconds into the game off of a cross pass from his senior brother, Hamse. Less than five minutes later, senior Yahya Mohamed scored a long goal from about 18 yards away. Mohamed’s shot went high and rested in the upper left corner of the Crookston goal, putting the Green Wave ahead 2-0. “A disappointing start to the game,” Crookston head coach Lon Boike said. “They got those two goals so early. But, after that, I felt like we played pretty well in the first half. In the last 10-15 minutes of the first half, we put a lot of pressure on (EGF). We didn’t get many shots off, but we were on the offensive end quite a bit.” The Pirates kept East Grand Forks off the board for the final 35 minutes of the half, but had limited chances on offense. With about five minutes left in the first half, senior Jacob Miller had a throw-in and found an open Jack Garmen near the goal, but Garmen’s shot went high and over the crossbar.

SECOND HALF –
East Grand Forks once again got off to a fast start to begin a half, as freshman Khalid Ismail scored just three minutes into the second period to put the Green Wave ahead, 3-0. The goal was assisted by Hamse Ismail, who finished with three assists in the game. Yaya Ismail then scored eight minutes later to put the Green Wave ahead 4-0. Later, after about 18 minutes of scoreless play, East Grand Forks got another great scoring chance after Crookston was called on a penalty inside their own 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Green Wave from just 12 yards away. Senior Tommy Ellis scored directly off of the penalty kick, giving EGF a 5-0 lead. The Green Wave scored their sixth and final goal with about six minutes left. Junior Khaddar Abdi, who was brought up from the junior varsity roster the day before, scored his first varsity goal of the season off of an assist from Abdullah Alshaban. That gave East Grand Forks six goals, tying their season-high in scoring output. “They’re a good team,” Coach Boike said. “They pass well and receive the ball. They got down the field and filled the lanes really well, and had lots of opportunities. They were a little more aggressive than we were.”

The Pirates fall to 2-8 and will play in the first round of the Section 8A Boys Soccer tournament next week.  The playoff seeds will be released Wednesday.  East Grand Forks won their third straight match and improved to 6-2-1.
