CROOKSTON BOY’S TENNIS BEAT PERHAM 4-3, FALLS TO EGF 4-3

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team won their second match in a row as they beat the Perham Yellowjackets 4-3 in the first match of the Crookston triangular.  “The doubles teams are really playing well for us,” said Coach Pat Janorschke. “

CROOKSTON VS PERHAM
Crookston swept the three doubles matches and won at fourth singles to pick up the team victory.

At first doubles, Mason Owens and Evan Christensen won 6-1, 6-2. “They played excellent and they are really meshing and playing well together,” said Coach Janorschke. “They took care of business and were dominant with their play.”

Second doubles Isaac Thomforde and Nathan Kelly, two first-year players, continue to show tremendous improvement as they won a hard-fought match 6-4, 6-3. “It was a great hard-fought match by those two,” said Coach Janorschke. “Isaac keeps improving every day and I love the way he is showing what he can do.  Nathan keeps getting better and it is fun watching those two continue to improve.”

The third doubles team of Xander Kuchan and George French won a tight 7-6, 6-4 match. “That was a good match.  They were duking it out and were able to come up with some big points,” said Coach Janorschke. “They battled the entire match and they won some big points for a key win.”

The lone Pirate singles victory came at fourth singles when Joey Brule won 6-1, 6-0. “Joey has been enjoying playing the singles matches,” said Coach Janorschke. “I think we found a good spot for him because he has played well.”

Coach Janorschke was pleased with how his team played and said the three losses were very good matches and the Pirates played well in the losses. “Jack Garmen was in that match and had a lot of deuces and ads, so he was right there in his match even though the score doesn’t show it,” said Coach Janorschke.  “All the singles players played well.”

Crookston improves to 2-13 on the year and will play East Grand Forks at 5:00 p.m.

CROOKSTON VS EAST GRAND FORKS

The match was tied 3-3 with the second doubles match left.  The second doubles match went to a third set and both teams sat and cheered on their teammates, but it was the Green Wave that won 10-5 in the third set to win the match 4-3.  “It was fun to see East Grand Forks cheering on their guys and our boys cheering on Isaac (Thomforde) and Nathan (Kelly) in the last match.  It was kind of a tournament-like atmosphere,” said Coach Janorschke. “It was a good match and Isaac and Nathan played well.”

Crookston won three singles matches.  Jack Garmen won a marathon three set match at first singles with a 10-5 victory in the third set.  “He really played well,” said Coach Janorschke. “He worked hard and it was a great match.”

Erik Coauette won his match at second singles 6-3, 7-5.  “Erik has had some great matches and played well,” said Coach Janorschke. “He had a lot of close games and played a solid match.”

Reggie Winjum cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fourth singles for the third Pirate victory. “Reggie had another lengthy match and he had a good, long match,” said Coach Janorschke. “He is so consistent and battles the entire match.”

All three doubles matches were tight.  First and second doubles lost in three sets and the third doubles team lost 7-5, 6-4. “The doubles teams played well, we just came up a little short,” said Coach Janorschke. “The boys felt good about their play today and continue to show some improvement and they keep working hard and that is all we can ask.”

Crookston drops to 2-14 on the year and will travel to Grand Rapids on Tuesday to play Grand Rapids and Hibbing.
