CROOKSTON FOOTBALL FALLS TO PELICAN RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Football team was dominated in all facets of the game as they fell to Pelican Rapids by a score of 54-6. The Vikings scored on five of their first six first-half drives and cruised the rest of the way to a Section 8 AA victory played in Pelican Rapids.

1st Quarter –
Pelican Rapids received the opening kickoff, and it didn’t take them long to start moving the ball. Timmy Guler completed a pass to Justin Jacobson for seven yards before Jack Kapenga ran for a 51-yard touchdown to put the Vikings up 8-0 after Guler ran in the two-point conversion. Crookston got the ball and went three and out. Park Rapids got the ball back and immediately returned it to Jack Kapenga for 15 yards. Two plays later, Pelican Rapids had a third and eight, and Guler would complete a pass to Jake Paulson for eight yards and the conversion. After two Jack Kapenga runs for eight yards and an incompletion, the Vikings had fourth and two, and Guler kept it himself and took it into the end zone for a 31-yard score. Treyvon Benson caught a pass for the two-point conversion.
Crookston needed to get something going down by two scores, but they went three and out and punted. The Pirates got a nice play on defense, with Parker Kelly intercepting a pass. Crookston could not use this momentum on offense, as they went three and out. Pelican Rapids got the ball and kept it on the ground with rushes from Guler for seven yards, Jack Kapenga for five yards, and Mark Kapenga for seven yards. Two plays later, Guler kept it himself and took it to the house for a 40-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was completed to Channing Russman, giving the Vikings a 24-0 lead.

2nd Quarter –
Crookston began the second quarter going three and out, and they had to punt. Pelican Rapids immediately capitalized on the defensive stop as Guler kept it again for a 36-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, so the Vikings had to settle for being up 30-0.
Crookston began their next drive with a Teagan Lubinski keeper that gained seven yards. They had a fourth and two, and Antonio Romero got the carry, and he converted for the first Pirate first down of the game. The Pirates could not get significant yards on the following three plays and had to punt. Pelican Rapids capitalized quickly as two plays into their drive, Guler completed a pass to Luke Sjolie for a 34-yard touchdown. After a completed two-point conversion to Benson, the Vikings led 38-0.
Crookston got the ball back, and it looked like they had another three and out, but a penalty on the punt gave them a fresh set of downs. The Pirates committed two penalties on the next three plays to get behind the chains and punted again. Pelican Rapids ran out the rest of the clock and went into halftime with a 38-0 lead. Coach Lubarski said at the end of the first half, “It was a butt-kicking.”

3rd Quarter –
Crookston started the half with the ball and gave it to Romero for a five-yard gain, two plays later, Carter Coauette got a carry for nine yards and a first down. Romero got two carries for six yards before a false start, a sack brought up fourth and 25, and Crookston punted.
Pelican Rapids made a change at quarterback, putting in Maclain Hovland, and he got a carry two plays into the drive for four yards. Mark Kapenga got two carries and gained 22 yards, and two plays later, Hovland completed a pass to Jacobson for a 15-yard touchdown. A Mark Kapenga run for the two-point conversion gave the Vikings a 46-0 lead. Crookston got the ball back, went three and out, and had to punt. Pelican Rapids took only three plays to find the end zone again, this time a pass from Hovland to Miguel Torres. Mark Kapenga ran it in for the two-point conversion, and the Vikings furthered their lead to 54-0. Crookston kept it on the ground for the rest of the quarter, including three Lubinski carries for 26 yards.

4th Quarter –
Crookston started the quarter with an 18-yard run from Carter Coauette before Teagen Lubinski ran it into the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, so the score was 54-6. Park Rapids got the ball, went three and out, and punted for the first time of the night. Crookston got the ball back and went three and out but caught a break on the punt as the Viking returner muffed the punt, and Crookston recovered. After the turnover, the Pirates could not get a first down and punted back to Pelican Rapids. The Vikings ran out the rest of the clock and finished the night with an impressive 54-6 victory.

Crookston falls to 0-4 on the year and hosts Roseau next Friday, Pelican Rapids improves to 3-1.
