The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team allowed a 10-0 run late in the first half, and that proved to be the difference as the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders won the game 76-64 in the season opener for both teams.
FIRST HALF –
The game was back and forth for most of the half as the game was tied at 4-4. LPA’s Kendra Nelson made a three-pointer before Chloe Boll answered with a basket. The Raiders’ Nelson made another three-pointer for a 10-6 lead. Crookston responded with four points, and after an LPA free throw, Chloe made a basket for a 12-10 Crookston lead with 12:37 left in the half. Crookston’s lead didn’t last long as LPA made a pair of free throws, but Chloe Boll answered with another basket to give the Pirates a 14-13 lead. LPA responded with four points before Grace Boll made a three-pointer, and Chloe Boll made a basket for a 19-17 lead. LPA’s Nelson scored five straight points before Crookston’s Madi Bruggeman and Naomi Johnson chipped in two points apiece for a 23-22 lead with over five minutes left in the half. LPA regained the lead with seven straight points for a 29-23 lead. Crookston’s Grace Boll stopped the run with a three-pointer, Bruggeman added a free throw, and the Pirates trailed 29-27. The teams exchanged baskets before LPA went on a 10-0 run to take a 41-29 lead with one minute to go in the half, and the Raiders took a 43-30 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Lake Park-Audubon started the second half by outscoring Crookston 14-9 for a 57-39 lead. Crookston tried to chip away at the deficit with a Chloe Boll basket and a Naomi Johnson three-pointer to get within a 59-44 deficit with 10:45 left in the game. A few minutes later, Crookston trailed 62-45 when Grace Boll made a three-pointer, Chloe Boll added a basket and after an LPA free throw, Chloe Boll added four more points to bring the Pirates within a 53-54 deficit with 4:45 remaining. The teams exchanged baskets for the next two minutes, and LPA led 69-60 with over two minutes left in the game. LPA made their free throws in the final minutes and won the game 76-64.
Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will travel to Red Lake County Central (Oklee) on Tuesday, December 3. KROX will have the game on the radio. Lake Park-Audubon improves to 1-0 on the year.
