Crookston Girls Basketball pulls away to beat Roseau

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team celebrated senior night as they used an 11-0 run early in the second half to take a double-digit lead and held on the rest of the way to beat the Roseau Rams 57-42 in a Section 8AA game played at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston started the game by scoring the first two baskets with the two seniors, Naomi Johnson and Joey Nesseth scoring for a 4-0 lead. Roseau responded by scoring seven straight points with a steal and a layup for Brooklyn Hulst, two free throws from Casey Kendrick, and a three-pointer from Audrey Hayden for a 7-4 Ram lead less than three minutes into the game. Crookston battled back and tied that game at 9-9 with a Grace Boll three-pointer and Madi Bruggeman added a basket for an 11-9 lead. Roseau responded with a pair of baskets to regain the lead at 13-11. Crookston answered with a 7-0 run with a Bruggeman basket, a Grace Boll three-pointer, and a Chloe Boll basket for an 18-13 lead. Roseau came back with an 8-0 run behind four points from Hulst, a three-pointer from Hayden, and a free throw from Aliviah Mather for a 21-18 lead with four minutes left in the half. Crookston’s Chloe Boll had a big response with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Pirates a 24-21 lead. The teams exchanged points in the final minute and Crookston took a 27-25 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston’s Grace Boll scored the first basket of the second half before Roseau’s Hulst made four straight points to tie the game at 29-29. Crookston took over and went on an 11-0 run with Bruggeman and Chloe Boll scoring four points apiece and a three-pointer by Grace Boll for a 40-29 lead with 12:24 remaining. Roseau chipped away at the deficit and trailed 44-36 when Bruggeman scored four more points and Chloe Boll made a three-pointer and Crookston led 51-36 with 5:36 to go in the game. Crookston made most of their free throws in the final three minutes and Crookston held on for a 57-42 victory.

Crookston improves to 5-11 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Thursday. Roseau drops to 3-13 on the year.
