CROOKSTON GIRL’S BASKETBALL CRUISES TO A VICTORY AT BAGLEY

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team used solid defense and took a 37-4 lead into halftime and cruised to a 66-14 victory over the Bagley Flyers in a Section 8AA game played in Bagley.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston didn’t waste any time and jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  “I thought we played well to open the game tonight,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “I thought we played solid defense and the girls were sharing the ball and making the extra play to get better scoring opportunities.” Bagley scored their first points of the game on a three-pointer just shy of six minutes into the game before Crookston ended the half on a 23-1 run to take a 37-4 lead into halftime.  “When we look at it from an overall perspective, we did an all-around good job in the half,” said Coach Zimmerman.  The only thing the Pirates weren’t happy with during the first half was the seven missed layups in the half. “We actually took a time out because of that,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We need to make those shots, especially as we get deeper into the season.”

SECOND HALF –
Crookston had an even better start to the second half and scored the first 17 points over a five-minute span to take a 54-4 lead with 13:05 left in the game.  “We are always looking for consistent starts,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We came out and executed and actually we started the second half better than we started the game.”  Kasey Cwikla led the Pirates with eight of her team’s 17 points to start the half.  Crookston went deep to the bench about halfway through the second half and running time started shortly after.  The second half went quick with the running time and Crookston won 66-14.  “It was nice to get everybody in the game and they played hard,” said Coach Zimmerman. “I thought the girls that came in for the last nine minutes communicated better than our first group.  They were loud and talking and that was great to see.”

Crookston improves to 9-2 on the year. Bagley drops to 0-9 on the season.
