CROOKSTON GIRLS BASKETBALL USES FIRST HALF RUN TO BEAT ROSEAU

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team used a 10-0 run at the end of the first half and held the lead the rest of the way for a 60-54 victory over the Roseau Rams in a Section 8AA matchup in Roseau.

FIRST HALF –
Roseau started the game on an 8-2 run behind two three-pointers from Brooklyn Hulst.  Crookston’s Halle Winjum stopped the run with five straight points to get within 8-7 three minutes into the game.  After a Roseau basket, Crookston tied the game at 10-10 with an Isabelle Smith three-pointer.  The game was tied at 12 and 14 before Roseau’s Kayla Bachleitner and Janna Preteau scored to give the Rams an 18-14 lead with 6:21 left in the half.  The Pirates had a big three-pointer from Emma Gunderson to bring them within one point before Roseau’s Bachleitner scored four straight points to give her team a 22-17 lead.  Crookston picked up the defense in the final two minutes of the half, and that sparked the offense also, as they finished the half on a 10-0 run.  Halle Winjum made a three-pointer, Chloe Boll scored five straight points before Naomi Johnson ended the half with a basket, and Crookston took a 27-22 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Roseau had a good start to the second half after a Winjum basket, the Rams responded with an Anya Severson basket and five points from Preteau to get within a 30-29 deficit. Borowicz scored the next five points, and Crookston continued to build on their lead and took a 41-33 lead after a Winjum basket five minutes into the half.  Roseau responded with a 9-4 run to get within a 45-42 deficit with 10 minutes left in the game.  Crookston answered with a 9-2 run that started with a Smith basket, and after a Roseau basket, the Pirates followed with a Winjum three-pointer.  Chloe Boll gave the Pirates a big spark with a couple of steals, with the second one leading to an assist on a Libby Salentine basket before an Emma Gunderson basket capped the run for a 54-44 lead with 4:14 remaining.  Borowicz had a big three-point play less than a minute later to give the Pirates an eight-point lead, and she would make three of her four free throw attempts in the final minute to give Crookston a 60-54 victory.

Crookston improves to 11-6 on the year and will travel to Wadena-Deer Creek for another Section 8AA matchup on Friday.  You can hear the game on KROX Radio.  Roseau drops to 10-9 on the season.
