CROOKSTON AND EAST GRAND FORKS PLAY TO A 2-2 OVERTIME TIME

East Grand Forks defeated Crookston in the second game of the season in Crookston 2-0.  On February 2, the Pirates came up with a 1-0 win over East Grand Forks in Crookston. Tonight was supposed to be the rubber match of three games the Section 8A rivals play this year, but the game ended in a 2-2 overtime tie in East Grand Forks.

First Period
Crookston started the game on the attack with several good chances, but the East Grand Forks goaltender Ashley Corbett was on task.  Corbett made some nice saves, while her defensemen did a great job of keeping Crookston to the outside as well. The Pirates finally found the back of the net when Nora Peterson walked in, letting a shot go that Corbett made the save on, but Peterson found the rebound and put it past Corbett to give Crookston a 1-0 lead with just over four minutes to go in the period. “That was a good rush by Nora,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “I’m not sure how she got to that rebound as it sat there bouncing, and Nora got in there for her own rebound, and nice to have that lead.” Crookston was happy going into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. “It was a good-paced first period,” said Moe. “I thought both sides had some very good chances, but both goalies played well.”

Second Period
East Grand Forks would score their first goal on a power play when Aleah Oshie capped off some nice passing by the Green Wave and scored on a rebound to tie the score at 1-1 halfway through the period. “We had problems of clearing the puck out of our zone,” said Moe. “When we had chances to clear, we’d try to make a move or pass too late, and they would rap it back into our zone.”  East Grand Forks had a couple of flurries the rest of the period but were stymied by Magsam until there were 47 seconds left in the period, and East Grand Forks’ Maggie Plante scored on a rebound, and the Green Wave led 2-1.  “That was almost like their first goal,” said Moe. “They put pressure on, got a shot on that Kailee made the save on, and we couldn’t clear the rebound, and they would score.”
It wasn’t going to be a one-goal deficit as the Pirates leading goal scorer, Reese Swanson, was given a head man pass from defenseman Rylee Solheim and Swanson was near the top of the circle to the right of Corbett and snapped off a shot for a goal with 10 seconds to go in the period, tying it at 2-2. “It was great to have that goal by Reese,” said Moe. “She was coming on a two on one, and I was thinking there was about a 99% chance she was going to shoot it. Reese came across, got to her forehand, and whistled it past their goalie. Nice way to end the period.”

Third Period
The period was much like the first two periods, except neither goalie would let anything through. Crookston had the only power play of the period and again had some good chances but either missed the net, a bouncing puck, or a save by their goalie. The play was physical in the first two periods but seemed to take it up a notch in the third period. “Especially in front of their net,” said Moe. “We’d try to get people in front and traffic in front of their goalie, but they played it physically and knocked our kids around and down.” Both teams continued to have chances, and it was a nail-biter until the end of the period.

Overtime
Both teams had six shots on goal in the overtime as it was up and down and back and forth the entire eight minutes. Early in the period, East Grand Forks took a shot that Magsam got a piece of, and it went off her, up over her into the net, but a quick whistle stopped play before the goal and was waved off!! “I remember back to the game we lost to them,” said Moe. “We had scored a goal trailing 1-0, and they waved it off for high-sticking, so things happen.” Three penalties were called in the eight-minute overtime!! The Pirates were able to skate one off early in the overtime. Then with 1:57 to go in the overtime, East Grand Forks was called for tripping, and Crookston had the one-man advantage for the rest of the game. East Grand Forks did a good job of killing off the penalty, and Crookston ended up taking the last penalty with 40 seconds to go, and again, the goaltenders would yield nothing, and the two teams ended up playing to a 2-2 tie. “Like the two previous games between these two teams, they’ve been very good, fast-paced, physical hockey games,” said Moe.

Crookston is now 4-6-1 on year and 2-4-1 in Section 8A, while East Grand Forks is 3-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Section. “The tie helps us more than East Grand Forks,” said Moe. “We’ve each won a game, each lost a game, and now a tie between us. Detroit Lakes defeated East Grand Forks earlier this year, and if we should defeat Detroit Lakes when we play them again, we should be the number three seed.”  Crookston also has another Section game with Thief River Falls to play, but the Prowlers have beaten the Pirates twice by a 3-1 score, so a win over Thief River Falls can’t hurt Crookston, but there are a few more games for the coaches to sort the seeds out. Crookston will host Grand Forks on Friday night, varsity only that will start at 8:00 PM.
East Grand Forks will be at Fergus Falls on Thursday.
