#1 RANKED WARROAD SCORES 16 IN WIN OVER PIRATE GIRLS HOCKEY

The Warroad Warriors Girl’s Hockey team looked the part of the number one ranked team in the state in a more than convincing 16-0 win over the Crookston Pirates in a Section 8A game played at the Crookston Sports Center.

Warroad wasted little time asserting themselves in the first period. Just 1:07 into the game Tahra Johnson scored on an assist from Genevieve Hendrickson giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Just 37-seconds later McKenzie Oelkers scored with assists from Genevieve Hendrickson and Kaitlyn Kotlowski providing assists. With 13:01 to play in the opening period, Hannah Corneliusen scored her first goal of the period with Karlie Meeker assisting the goal pushing the lead to 3-0. Kaitlyn Kotlowski made it 4-0 following a pass from Sydney Phaneuf with 11:28 to play in the opening period. Kotlowski returned the favor setting up Phaneuf for a goal giving the Warriors a 5-0 lead. Genevieve Hendrickson made it 6-0 before Julianna Teske found the back of the net on a power play giving Warroad a 7-0 lead. Hannah Corneliusen scored the final goal of the period with an assist from McKenzie Oelkers giving the Warriors an 8-0 lead after the first period of play. “There were a couple things that they did to us that we just hadn’t seen before,” said Crooskton head coach Tim Moe. “Their third forward was playing up high in the slot and our defender was losing her a bit and then they did some back door things that opened up that we just hadn’t seen before. We talked about that during the first intermission and I thought our girls did a much better job with it in the second period and adjusted to that.”

The Warriors added two goals in the second period. Marlie Johnston scored with 12:07 to play in the period with assists from Madison Lavergne and Lila Lanctot made it 9-0. Warroad scored their tenth goal on a finish from Genevieve Hendrickson set up by Kaitlyn Kotlowski allowing the visitors to take a 10-0 lead after two periods of play. Grace Koshney made 18 saves in net for Crookston in the second period to keep the Warriors to just two-second period goals. “I thought we competed for the most part, Dillynn Wallace had a breakaway in the second period and had a pretty nice move near center ice,” said Moe. “She can sometimes get down on herself, but she needs to understand that she’s a pretty good hockey player and put on a great move there. I told her after that move that she was learning to compete right now and that she does have some skills and displayed that against the number one team in the state. We were just outgunned.”

Warroad continued to have no trouble scoring in the final period. Madison Lavergne scored an unassisted goal just 1:10 in the period. With 15:15 to play Warroad’s Hannah Corneliuseen scored the Warrior’s second goal of the period on an assist from McKenzie Oelkers. Warroad added its thirteenth goal of the night with 10:45 remaining as Genevieve Hendrickson scored an unassisted goal giving the visitors a 13-0 lead. The Warriors scored three more goals in the final period with Tiffany Foster netting the final goal of the night to close out Warroad’s 16-0 win. “There’s no drop off from line one to line four, they’re just fantastic,” summarized Moe of Warroad’s dominance. “I thought, for the most part, we held up ok. In the second and third periods, we went down to two centers. We did a pretty good job playing with that. For the most part, our legs ended up being ok, they’re just that much better we are. They’re just that fast, quick, and anticipate so well. Our kids were trying, we just couldn’t keep up with that pace for an extended period of time.”

Crookston falls to 3-15-1 on the season. The Pirates return to the ice on Friday when they host Morris-Benson at 7:00 p.m. Warroad improves to 21-0.
