The Jamestown Bluejays scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 4-1 win over the Crookston Pirates Girl’s hockey team in a non-Section game played at the Crookston Sports Center.
1st Period –
Jamestown and Crookston skated evenly through the first period with both sides mustering five shots on goal through the opening 16 minutes of the period. Jamestown broke through with a late goal to take the lead into the intermission. With 45-seconds left in the period, Ella Roaldson set up Abby Grounds for a goal giving the Bluejays a 1-0 lead after one period. “We’ve been scoring goals, and we thought we could still put some in,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe after his team’s scoreless opening period. “Kailee Magsam wasn’t the issue today, we just never did enough offensively to help her out.”
2nd Period –
Jamestown doubled its lead early in the second period. 3:39 after the first intermission, Megan Albrecht cycled the puck to Erika Anderson, who found Sydney Mittleider for the visitors’ second goal of the game, giving the Bluejays a 2-0 lead. Five minutes later, Ella Roaldson weaved the puck through the Pirates defense before depositing a shot into the net, giving Jamestown a 3-0 lead. Bluejays goaltender Jade Nelson stopped all six shots she faced in the second period protecting Jamestown’s 3-0 lead into the second intermission. “We couldn’t sustain pressure in the offensive zone,” added Moe. “We gave Ella Roaldson way too much time and space. She physically dominated us, and we didn’t have an answer for her.”
3rd Period –
Jamestown opened the third period scoring with a goal right after the puck dropped at center ice. Just 16-seconds into the third period Abby Grounds scored her second goal assisted by Ella Roaldson, giving the Bluejays a 4-0 lead. Crookston netted its first goal with 11:27 to play after Morgan Nelson fired a shot from the blue line past Jamestown’s goaltender and into the back of the net after the puck was passed from Kylee Meier and MacKenze Epema. “We got some more shots and had a couple of opportunities,” noted Moe. “We couldn’t bury a puck when we needed to. If we could’ve got the deficit to within two, I maybe would’ve felt more confident about pulling a goaltender there.” Jamestown clamped down defensively the rest of the period as the Bluejays closed out a 4-1 win. “You never know out of a break what you’re going to get,” added Moe. “We have kids who have been out of town and haven’t skated for a couple of days. I don’t know if we played differently with a different goalie back there. We knew we needed to change what we were doing after two periods, but at that point, we were already down 3-0. I thought we did a better job in the third in getting after it and getting more chances in the offensive zone.”
Crookston falls to 6-8 this season. The Pirates return to the ice on Saturday when they host Grand Forks at 2 P.M. Jamestown improves to 3-4.
