Crookston Girls Hockey falls to the River Cities Blades

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team were no match for the River Cities Blades on Friday night, as they fell by a score of 8-2 at the Crookston Sports Center.

FIRST PERIOD
The first period started with a bang, and it looked like it would be a bang for the Pirates, as the Blades committed a penalty in the first minute. However, Tessa Boden got gifted a shorthanded breakaway and beat Madi Abrams in net, making it 1-0 Blades. After that, the Blades got a power play, and Sydney Burnevik was able to cash in on that, making it 2-0. The Pirates were able to respond, however, as Emma LaPlante cashed in a rebound off a shot from Christina Hershey to cut the lead down to 2-1. Unfortunately, this did not spark much momentum for the Pirates, as just over a minute later, the Blades struck for two goals in 16 seconds, with the first one coming from Boden, her 2nd of the night, and the second one coming from Bella Lindquist. Though the Pirate offense only mustered 6 shots on goal, their defense held firm for the remainder of the period, so the game went into the intermission with a 4-1 Blades lead.

SECOND PERIOD
As the second period got underway, the Blades furthered their clamps on the Pirate offense, barely allowing them to possess the puck in the period. The first half of the period consisted of the Blades pounding Abrams in net, but she continued to make saves. That is, until the second half of the period, where a brilliant passing play set up Marisa Peterson during her first shift of the night, putting the Blades up 5-1. They would add another one just over 3 minutes later, as Caitlin Easton joined the scoring party to give the Blades a 6-1 lead. After the Pirates only got 6 shots on goal in the first period, they could only get 4 shots on goal in the second, as the Blades took a 6-1 lead into the 3rd.

THIRD PERIOD
In the 3rd period, the Blades were very quick to push to running time, as Sydney Burnevik scored her 2nd of the night to put the Blades up 7-1. However, the Pirates were quick to answer, as off of a faceoff, Adley Vigness sniped a shot by Elin Burnevik to cut the lead down to 7-2, eliminating running time. Unfortunately for the Pirates, that would be the only shot on goal they would get in the period, as the Blades completely stuffed the Pirate offense. Bella Lindquist would add one more to return the game to running time, and the Blades would finish the game with an 8-2 victory.

Crookston drops to 4-14 on the season, while River Cities improves to 10-7.
