CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY SUFFERS COSTLY PENALTIES IN LOSS TO DETROIT LAKES

The Crookston Pirates girl’s Hockey team gave up two power-play goals during a five-minute major penalty in the third period of a 6-2 loss to the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game played at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes.
Detroit Lakes dominated possession in the first period outshooting Crookston 18-2. The extended offensive zone time led to a breakthrough with 7:21 left in the first period when Abagail King sent a pass into the slot where Emma Coley rifled the shot into the back of the net giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Detroit Lakes doubled their lead with 1:32 left in the period when Coley and King combined for their second goal and assist with Coley beating Crookston goaltender Grace Koshney and giving the hosts a 2-0 lead after one period. “Grace Koshney kept us in it by standing on her head in the first period,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “She played extremely well, but at some point, we needed to help her out, and I’m just not sure we had the right compete level in that first period.”
In the second period, Detroit Lakes appeared poised for a lopsided win. With 9:17 left in the middle period, Ella Hess skated along the end boards and sent a pass to Abagail King in the left-wing circle where King fluttered a wrist shot under the blocker-side are of Koshney giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Crookston responded on the power play with 4:26 left in the period when Samantha Sanders delivered a pass into the slot for Catherine Tiedemann who fired a shot past the Detroit Lakes netminder cutting the deficit down to 3-1. “Samantha got her head up in the neutral zone on our power play and was able to find Catherine,” said Moe. “Catherine skated through center all alone and was able to finish off the power play goal to get us some momentum.” Less than ten seconds later after Nora Peterson won the faceoff over to Samantha Sanders who sent a pass to Catherine Tiedemann allowing Tiedemann to skate into the slot a rifling a wrist shot into the top of the net with 4:17 left in the period cutting the deficit down to 3-2 after two periods of play. “Samantha Sanders was able to chase down a loose puck charging into space, and she set up Catherine in space again, and Catherine was able to capitalize. It was huge for momentum and gave us a lot of positives to try to build off of heading into that final period. When we moved our feet and skated with our heads up looking for the open person we scored goals.”
In the third period, Crookston received a five-minute major penalty for boarding giving Detroit Lakes a lengthy powerplay to try and extend their lead. With the extra skater, Emma Coley completed her hat trick off an assist from Abigail King giving the Lakers a 4-2 lead with 10:41 to play. Just 32-seconds later Karrigan Hallisey scored Detroit Lakes’ second power-play goal of the minute giving the Lakers a 5-2 lead with 10:09 remaining. Detroit Lakes put the game away for good with 8:03 remaining when Payton Carlblom scored an unassisted goal to close out the Lakers 6-2 win. “We’re just not good enough to play a man down for nine penalty minutes out of seventeen in the final period,” summarized Moe. “We weren’t able to build off the momentum after the second period was disappointing. The boarding penalty was the right call and is a play that needs to be taken out of hockey. It’s a learning experience for our girls. Hopefully, we can improve from this and bounce back against a very good Fergus Falls team on Saturday.”
The Pirates fall to 2-6-1 this season and return to the ice on Saturday when Crookston hosts Fergus Falls at 12 p.m. on KROX. Detroit Lakes improves 3-7.
