Crookston Girls Hockey falls to Roseau in overtime

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team gave the Roseau Rams everything they had, but just did not have enough, as the Rams won by a score of 2-1 in overtime at the Crookston Sports Center on Monday afternoon.

FIRST PERIOD
As the period started, both offenses looked like they were there to play, as each team got a shot on goal, but from there,
Roseau took complete control. They dominated puck possession and stymied every chance the Pirates had. Early in the period, a Pirate interference call put the Rams on the power play, but Madi Abrams in the net stopped all three shots she faced on the power play to keep the Rams off the board. The Pirates were unable to muster anything on offense, however, and then they committed another penalty. Though the Rams got three more shots on goal, Abrams was able to make all the stops she needed. In the final few minutes, Abrams stopped a breakaway and then made a beautiful save on a deflected shot, meaning that even though the Rams led 14-3 in shots on goal, the period ended scoreless.

SECOND PERIOD
The second period started the same way as the first, with Roseau controlling the puck for the first few minutes, yet getting stopped by Abrams. However, things began to change at the nine-minute mark, when Roseau committed their first penalty, putting the Pirates on the power play. That gave them an amazing look inside for Kinsley Wangan, but Madalyn Lisell made the save for the Rams. After that one was killed, the Pirates got on another power play just a few seconds later. This time, a perfect pass to Christina Hershey set up a shot, but that was also stopped on a great play by Lisell. Overall, Lisell had six saves, all of them being challenging, but she was able to stop everything, and the game remained scoreless after two periods.

THIRD PERIOD
In the third period, the first half of it went by the exact same way as the rest of the period had gone before. The Pirates had a power play carryover into the thirdrd period, but only got one shot on goal on it. Roseau returned and once again controlled the puck, preventing the Pirates from advancing. This all culminated in Jasmine Hovda taking advantage of a screened Madi Abrams, beating her shortside to give the Rams a 1-0 lead, off their fouth power play of the game. However, that lead only lasted 17 seconds as Christina Hershey buried a perfect pass from Emma LaPlante, tying the game at 1-1. The Pirates were only able to get one shot on goal for the remainder of the period. But Madi Abrams stayed calm and kept the game tied. In the final seconds, after a hit by Madalyn Lisell forced a Pirate power play, Ella Ketring had a shot shorthanded as the horn sounded, but Abrams made the play, and the game went to Overtime tied at 1-1.

OVERTIME
The Pirates started the overtime period on the power play, but never properly possessed the puck in that frame. Roseau controlled it the entire time, and that all led to the 1:12 mark, where Ella Ketring redeemed herself after missing in the final seconds of the period by burying a rebound to give the Rams a 2-1 win.

Crookston drops to 6-17 on the season and will play Sartell on Friday to wrap up the regular season. Roseau improves to 13-9 on the year and will be at Warroad on Tuesday.
