CROOKSTON GIRLS SOCCER COASTS TO VICTORY OVER PELICAN RAPIDS

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Soccer team had their first game at home this season hosting the Pelican Rapids Vikings and the Pirates dominated the first half and cruised to a 7-0 victory at the Crookston High School Soccer field.

The first half started slowly with play sticking around midfield and both teams playing bunched together with not much spacing. However, Crookston was able to work through it to get on the board first. Ny Nguyen got the scoring started in the 13th minute on an assist from Amelia Overgaard and then two minutes later, Overgaard scored for herself to make it 2-0. “At first we were really bunched and they clogged the middle of the field,” explained Pirates Head Coach Sarah Reese. After another scoreless 13 minutes, Crookston’s Cassie Solheim went on a personal 4-0 run in a five-minute span. She put home shots in minutes 28, 31, 32, and 32 with Overgaard and Maddie Harbott assisting on two of the goals. Crookston’s offense still was not done in the half as Kailee Magsam capped the first-half scoring with a goal in the 35th minute with Clara Meyer assisting to give the Pirates a 7-0 halftime lead. “We adjusted to spread out across the field which gave us some better passing lanes,” said Coach Reese. “That space allowed us to make some runs and find the back of the net.”

The second half had significantly less action as both defenses held the offenses off the scoreboard. Crookston played a slow brand of soccer focusing on controlling the ball and making smart plays. “We controlled the space in the second half,” said Coach Reese. “It is very windy so we kept the ball on the ground as much as we could.”
Crookston had some scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not find the back of the net in the final 40 minutes. Hamda Ibrahim was able to make five saves for Pelican Rapids in the second half and made a couple of others plays in the box to halt the Pirate’s progress. Reese Swanson had to make just one save in the game which came late in the second half.

Crookston improves to 2-2 on the year. They will look to jump above .500 on Thursday when they travel to Detroit Lakes to take on the Lakers.
Pelican Rapids falls to 0-2 this season.
