The Crookston Pirates Girls’ Soccer team gave up five goals in each half falling 10-0 to the East Grand Forks Green Wave in a Section 8A match played at the Crookston High School Soccer Field.
East Side wasted little time setting the tone in the match when Chloe Torgerson scored off a pass from Kora Jordheim giving the Green Wave a 1-0 lead just 5:12 into the match. East Grand Forks added a second goal when Macy Skyberg scored off a cross from Brynn Hillman giving the visitors a 2-0 lead just four minutes later. In the 23rd minute, EGF added a third goal when Kora Jordheim slotted a shot into the net after being set up by Chloe Torgerson with a 3-0 advantage. 30-seconds later the Green Wave ‘s Kora Jordheim scored her second goal tapping in a long pass sent by Grace Kronlund pushing the East Grand Forks lead to 4-0. 48-seconds before halftime the visitors scored their fifth goal when Ellie McDonald scored off an assist by Kaylie Bies giving the Green Wave a 5-0 lead. “In the first half all of the goals that were scored, were scored on backdoor plays,” said Crookston head coach Sarah Reese. “So we talked about backdoors and they have a lot of weapons because they make really good runs and really good angled runs so if your defense isn’t communicating you miss those runs where you don’t switch who you’re marking and you leave a hole. They were making good crosses and finding players to put the ball in the net.”
In the second half, East Grand Forks continued their dominance. Chloe Torgerson scored two-straight goals for the Green Wave within the first five minutes of the second half giving the visitors a 7-0 lead. In the 55th minute, Megan Polley scored giving East Grand Forks an 8-0 lead. The lead grew to 9-0 after Brynn Hillman scored 65:31 into the match. Just before the final whistle, Emmy Heisler scored one final goal for the Green Wave to close out the 10-0 win for East Grand Forks. “Today, I saw a lot of good things on the field,” said Reese. “A lot of the play was in the middle third so that was encouraging. That tells me that we’re going to the ball and playing aggressively. They just have such depth on their team. They’re subbing in ten at a time every ten minutes or so and we just didn’t have that. We had two starters that didn’t play today for health reasons, so we were going deep into our bench too, but not subbing ten at a time. Having said that, the girls never gave up and they kept working hard. We had a couple shots on goal and while it was difficult, we did see a lot of good things.”
The Pirates fall to 1-12-1 this season and return to the field on Thursday when Crookston hosts Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at 3:30 p.m. East Grand Forks improves to 10-4-1.
